Feature Car: Simon Grima’s Phantom FE Holden Ute

30 Apr

Simon Grima's FE Holden

A small selection of images from a shoot completed in 2010 on Simon Grima’s incredible phantom FE Holden ute. Originally a sedan (hence the ‘Phantom’), Simon put in a lot of man hours shaping and changing the metalwork to take the form of a utility – without any trade qualifications, just learning as he went along.

It’s powered by an injected Holden 5L and runs almost entirely Commodore running gear, with plenty of other Holden bits and piece throughout the build sourced from his large stockpile of parts collected over the years. The full shoot is coming out in issue 39 of Custom Utes magazine, published by Express Media Group. Both words and images by Hosking Industries.

Strobist: All images (except the driving shot) use two 430EXII Speedlites and a 580EXII. All mounted on their little ground-level stands, bare and on full power; triggered with Cactus V4s. Two light the side of the car and the 580EXII lights the nose or tail (whichever is in shot). Not a lot of post processing beyond saturation etc.

You can click on the thumbnails to view them in 1280×1024 resolution and feel free to use them as your desktop wallpaper! CLICK HERE to view the gallery on Flickr.

Wicked Wednesdays: FREE High-Res Automotive Stock Images 2

27 Apr

There’s the second in our series of automotive stock photos of classic cars, specifically full frontal images taken as symmetrically as possible without spending all day trying to make them 100% perfect. Although, they’re mostly just about there.

Makes and models include a classic Ford Cortina, Ford Fairlane, 1953 Ford pickup truck, early 1950s Buick, 1958 Chevrolet and more.

As usual, all our textures and stock images are FREE for commercial and personal use, however resale, repackaging and redistribution away from the Hosking Industries website and Flickr account are prohibited. In short, don’t go passing them off as your own or trying to make money off of them by selling them on.

Tech Feature: Street Machine – May 2011 Issue

20 Apr

The latest issue of Street Machine magazine has just gone on sale around the country featuring our technical feature on exhaust system fitment. We followed along as Liverpool Exhaust fit up a new mild steel system on a sweet old Holden Brougham with a new small-block Chev’, trans’ and rebuilt diff’.

There’s a ton of great info in the story and the entire magazine is bursting with great cars, event coverage and other fun stuff. So, grab a copy from your local newsagency, supermarket or petrol station. You can see a larger version of the cover art by clicking HERE.

Wicked Wednesdays: FREE High-Res Automotive Stock Images 1

20 Apr

A collection of six high-resolution automotive stock images displaying vehicles from a dead-on front perspective. All images are just about perfectly straight on, meaning the perspective is right and no skewed.

This is the first in a series of two or three week’s worth of similar images of different classic vehicles. This first group includes a first-gen Ford Mustang, 1955 Chevrolet pickup truck, Chevelle, HSV GTS Coupe, Camaro and 1957 Chevrolet.

All stock images are free for personal and commercial use, however you may NOT redistribute, repackage or resell the images as your own. So, don’t go putting them in other compilations of stock images, on CDs or DVDS or passing them off as your own product to sell.

Design: Hosking Industries’ New Business Cards

16 Apr

Hosking Industries' Business Card

Hosking Industries' Business Card

This is the design of Hosking Industries’ new business card for our photojournalism services. We’ll be revising the design regularly as the pile runs out, updating them with other examples of our photographic work. Our original card design didn’t use any photographic elements as we hadn’t started shooting cars as our business yet – plus we were wanting them to represent not only photography and automotive journalism, but graphic design, copywriting, web design and much more as well.

We reckon this design kind of covers all the bases and shows off some of our design skills at the same time. Hope you like it and we hope we get the chance to hand you one of them at some point, too!

Hosking Industries offers commercial and private photographic services, specialising in the automotive and music industries. Even if you don’t think your car or bike is good enough for a full feature in a magazine, we can still shoot your pride and joy just as if it were going into one; making it look as glamorous as the vehicles you see in print on newsstands all over the world. Wicked Wednesdays: FREE High-Resolution Abstract Textures

13 Apr

So, things have been a little quiet around here lately… the only thing we seem to have time to post lately has been the weekly Wicked Wednesday textures. In a way, that’s a great thing because it means we’re super busy shooting feature cars and bikes for magazines all over the world as well as writing up a storm. We’ve really got to make more of an effort to get on here more often, though.

This weeks texture pack is all about close-ups and abstracts of relatively mundane objects. Often these kinds of images can provide a different view of the world and both inspire a project or become a pivotal part of it and we hope that you find a use for one or more of these FREE high-resolution images in your future design projects. The image set includes close-ups of an electric guitar neck and strings, heavily decayed painted timber, the skin of a human palm, a plasma screen and more.

As usual, all Hosking Industries texture images are FREE for personal and commercial use, however we do not permit the resale, repackaging or redistribution of the images. In short, don’t go passing them off as your own, putting them in some super jumbo compilation of super dooper textures under your own name and crap like that. We’ll take your balls!

Design: Fresh Logo and Business Card for BLISS Custom Machining

07 Apr

BLISS Custom Engineering's New Logo

BLISS Custom Engineering's New Logo BLISS Custom Engineering's New Logo

Here are some samples of the new logo and business card design we created for Queensland business BLISS Custom Machining. The client wanted something simple but memorable that they could machine into their custom jobs. We took that inspiration and tried to design something that looked like metal. Also displayed in straight red, white and black are some alternative options we drafted during the design process.

Wicked Wednesdays: FREE High-Resolution Decay Textures

06 Apr

Worn, aged, decayed, damaged, dirty, grungy, old… there are some words in the english language that get us excited and for some reason these are some of those words. We just love the look of aged, decayed old surfaces, rusting metal, flaking paint, decade’s old paint splatters… you get the idea. So this week we’ve got a collection of six high-resolution images containing stuff like that all for you and all for free!

We snapped these photos with the trusty 7D while out shooting a Ute Muster in Castle Hill, NSW Australia last weekend – so they’re fresh and new, unlike the subject matter!
