Live: Steve Vai @ Enmore Theatre, Sydney – 15 July, 2013

Having had the pleasure of seeing Joe Satriani in concert at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney a few years back, one of the things left on our bucket list was to see Steve Vai: the very guy Ben played air guitar to throughout his younger years with Vai’s Passion & Warfare album cranking out of his boom box. That was officially ticked off the list on July 15, 2013, when Ben photographed and reviewed Steve Vai’s gig at the Enmore for lifemusicmedia.com. You can read it below.

In the sphere of instrumental music, few names stand as tall as Steve Vai‘s. With a career that really started to take off while under the tutelage of Frank Zappa and then a stint with both Whitesnake and David Lee Roth‘s band, his place in the pantheon of music icons was cemented with the release of his second solo album, ‘Passion and Warfare’, in 1990.

23 years later, Vai is still adding music to his catalogue as vital and urgent as any of his output in the ’90s. It was no surprise then, to find Sydney’s Enmore Theatre almost at capacity for the local leg of his tour in support of ‘The Story of Light’.

While there were perhaps more women and families in the crowd than this reviewer (and self-confessed Vai fan) would have predicted, the majority of punters were of the guitar-nerd persuasion. That’s OK though, given that there’s no more appreciative a crowd for this kind of music than the type that’s ready to air-guitar in public like no-one is watching.

Opinion Piece: Blocked! (Street Commodores Editorial Columns)

22 Jul

This is the ninth in a regular series of editorial pieces we’ll be posting here on the blog, originally written by Hosking Industries’ Ben Hosking for Street Commodores magazine and other magazines he’s completed opinion pieces for. This column appeared in issue 175 of Street Commodores:

Blocked! (Written 27 July, 2010)

Sure, writing for magazines can be a bloody sweet gig. But every now and then, we all get a decent dose of writer’s block.

Despite the stresses and deadlines, the last seven or eight years have been the best in my working life – without question. Sure, before I moved to Sydney in 1999 I worked in the music industry with is about the most fun industry you can work in. Sadly though the pay is almost always shit and you’ll get kicked in the teeth by it plenty of times.

Working on magazines – on a subject I love, no less – is employment heaven. Now I’m doing it for myself, working from my home office, it’s even better! Except it can be a little hard sometimes, knowing your work is right there in the back room, just crying for some more attention. And I usually give it all the attention it can take – it can become an addiction.

Logo Design: Woods & Woods Motor Car Co.

18 Jul

Hosking Industries recently created two new logo designs for Woods & Woods Motor Car Co., based on the Central Coast of NSW, Australia. The client requested Art Deco design styles for both logos, as their primary stock in trade is the restoration of pre-war vehicles and the creation of bespoke 1930s-style phantoms. You can see the entire gallery HERE.

With the deadline to the 2013 MotorEx fast approaching, it was a rapid process of drafting and proofing, before also designing the company’s MotorEx display materials, business cards and fliers. The business cards will feature a three-step process involving both spot UV coating and spot foil application.

If your business is in need of a new logo or you have run out of business cards, feel free to request an obligation-free quote! And be sure to check out the Woods & Woods trade stand at this year’s MotorEx, starting tomorrow, July 19, 2013. While you’re there, be sure to visit The Chop Shop and Ziggy’s Hot Rods stands and pick up one of their posters, with photography also by Hosking Industries!

Opinion Piece: Dare to Be Original (Street Commodores Editorial Columns)

16 Jul

This is the eighth in a regular series of editorial pieces we’ll be posting here on the blog, originally written by Hosking Industries’ Ben Hosking for Street Commodores magazine and other magazines he’s completed opinion pieces for. This column appeared in issue 174 of Street Commodores:

Dare to Be Original (Written July 1, 2010)

There’s no need to follow the pack. But you do need to have conviction in your ideas and ideals.

It can be all too easy to end up building a car that’s just the same as everyone else’s. Perhaps you’re truly inspired by the cars you see in Street Commodores or your local car show. Maybe you feel limited by what the aftermarket offers you in the way of off-the-shelf parts. There’s also a good chance that you’re swayed by the common reaction to Commodores that show a healthy percentage of originality. Sadly that reaction is rarely overwhelmingly positive.

Just take a wander through the Street Commodores online forum. There’s a ‘My Commodore’ section where members can display photos and technical details of their pride and joy. More often than not, anyone who strays too far from the perceived regular path scores themselves some overly critical and unnecessarily harsh replies.

CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to view and download six FREE desktop wallpaper images of Michael Timms’ Holden VK Commodore! Photo fans will find our EXIF data on each image as well as our lighting information on the detail shots (sorry strobist fans, the exteriors were shot with natural light this time). Enjoy!
