Opinion Piece: Car Shopping (Street Commodores Editorial Column)

24 Nov

This is the 20th in a regular series of editorial pieces we’ll be posting here on the blog, originally written by Hosking Industries’ Ben Hosking for Street Commodores magazine and other magazines he’s completed opinion pieces for. This column appeared in issue 187 of Street Commodores:

Car Shopping (Written June 1, 2011)

With Project RAT304 gone, the journey to find a new daily began in earnest.

No one could claim that I tried very hard to sell the nasty old VH wagon, known lovingly as the ‘Rat. Besides a mention on the Street Commodores forum ‘for sale’ section and a couple of for sale signs in the back windows, the only other promotion my desire to sell got was mentioning it to people in passing.

When I left the warm safety and regular paycheck of SC HQ last January I had to make a choice between Project XXX and the wagon. It was just going to be impossible to afford both projects and naturally, the VP won the argument hands down. This relegated the wagon to daily driver duties – a task it performed admirably for a few years.

We had the pleasure of finally seeing Melbourne modern metal band Circles perform in Sydney on November 9, 2013 at the Bald Faced Stag Hotel – supported by Dawn Heist, Red Bee and Beggar’s Orchestra. Below is our review of the gig and our image gallery or 35 photos, originally published on Lifemusicmedia.com.

Contemporary Australian metal was on show in a big way tonight at Sydney’s Bald Faced Stag Hotel in Leichardt. The small room has played host to a surprising number of high-profile acts over the last couple of years, including some of the last shows by Suicide Silence before Mitch Lucker’s untimely passing and a recent show by UK noise merchants Rolo Tomasi. Tonight, Melbourne djent exponents Circles hit the joint, promoting their debut full-length album, ‘Infinitas’.

Three other Aussie acts helped get the night’s proceedings underway, starting with local act Beggar’s Orchestra. The band kicks off to a pretty empty room, but thoroughly entertains the assembled group that clearly includes a large contingent of enthusiastic friends and fans with their unique mix of dynamic and dramatic songs. They’re good to watch, with some good stage presence and while the vocal harmonies get better as the set progresses, overall they’re a great addition to tonight’s line up.

Feature Car: Tony’s 1967 1300 Volkswagen Beetle

14 Nov

Our first photo shoot for VW Magazine Australia came out last week: a feature on Tony’s immaculately restored 1967 1300 Volkswagen Beetle. Photographing unmodified vehicles is certainly something new to Hosking Industries, but we enjoyed the change and the feature looks great.

Tony has a long history of modifying Rotary-powered Mazdas, but with a young family and a few more years under his belt, the Beetle is now the automotive love of his life. Be sure to read the entire story in the November-January issue, which is on sale now.

As always, we’ve got a series of FREE desktop wallpaper images for you to enjoy and strobist fans will find our lighting information and EXIF data on each image’s caption, too (although only the detail shots used off-camera flash). Hosking Industries was lucky enough to witness the onslaught that is a Behemoth live show last time the Polish group played Sydney in 2010 when they destroyed the Metro. Three years later and singer Nergal has beaten Leukemia into submission and clearly had something to prove when the band took to the Manning Bar stage at Sydney uni on October 26. Read our review below and enjoy 35 images from the show by CLICKING HERE or on the thumbnails above:

Having witnessed Poland’s blackened death metal legends Behemoth slay everyone in attendance on their Sydney date of their last Australian tour in 2010, you can bet we were more than a little excited when we learned of their upcoming 2013 tour dates. Fast forward to Saturday October 26 and we arrive at Sydney Uni’s Manning Bar to find that several hundred other excited Behemoth fans were already lining out the door and around the corner.

First up on tonight’s three-band line-up is Sydney’s own Exekute; a young death metal group that clearly has a bright future if tonight’s tight performance is anything to go by. While lacking a little in terms of stage presence, the band more than makes up for the short fall with a barrage of rapid fire, brutal riffs and plenty in the audience seem already very familiar with their tunes.

Touring nationally with Behemoth is Italy’s Hour of Penance who is next on stage, upping the ante in terms of presence and brutality, even if the mix leaves things sounding a little one dimensional. Guitarist Giulio Moschini whips more windmills than your typical Dutch flour mill and singer Paolo Pieri turns out to be the second of three diminutive vocalists tonight who prove good things come in small packages, packing a mighty growl that gets the crowd fist-pumping for more.

Feature Car: ‘Eleanor’-Inspired Mustang Fastback

06 Nov

We almost fell over when we first saw the cover of issue 16 of Gasoline magazine carrying two of our photo shoots on the front. One of those was this incredible ‘Eleanor’-Inspired Mustang Fastback that was unveiled at the 2013 MotorEx back in July.

The subject of an intensive two-year rebuild that saw the car worked on almost 24/7, there’s very little of the original car left besides some of the core beneath. And watch those body lines, because they’re sharp! Pick up a copy of issue 16 of Gasoline from all good newsagents – and probably some bad ones, too.

Feature Car: Kurt Davis’ Holden GTS Monaro

04 Nov

Issue 16 of Gasoline magazine just hit newsstands country wide and features our photo shoot and feature story on Kurt Davis’ Holden GTS Monaro on the front cover. The result of an eight-year rebuild, the coupe is immaculate and runs a stout 307ci small-block Chev’, although Kurt tells us that everything is 100-percent reversible to stock.

Find out what else Kurt says about the rebuild on his Platinum silver GTS in the latest issue of Gasoline, on sale everywhere now.

Feature Car: Keith Kiely’s Ford Mustang Coupe

01 Nov

We originally photographed Keith Kiely’s immaculate Mustang coupe way back in early 2011 for American magazine Modified Mustangs & Fords. This month it finally surfaced, together with our accompanying feature story. Check out their November issue, on-sale now, for the full story.

While we reckon our work has improved considerably since 2011, we didn’t want to deny the world the beauty of Keith’s Mustang. So enjoy! As always, you can download six FREE desktop wallpaper images of the car by clicking on the thumbnails below or CLICKING HERE for the full gallery.
