The List: All the Bands We’ve Photographed… So Far

28 Feb

Live Music Photography    Live Music Photography

We were thinking that it may not be that easy to figure out what bands we’d photographed in concert via this blog. So, why not compile a list?! We’re up to 110 performances so far and each can be found by simply clicking on the band name (If the name isn’t hyperlinked, it means we haven’t uploaded the gallery yet – but it’s coming!):

Opinion Piece: Sounds of Silence (Street Commodores Editorial Column)

20 Feb

This is the 2ist in a regular series of editorial pieces we’ll be posting here on the blog, originally written by Hosking Industries’ Ben Hosking for Street Commodores magazine and other magazines he’s completed opinion pieces for. This column appeared in issue 189 of Street Commodores:

Sounds of Silence (Written 4.7.11)

Is car audio making a resurgence in the Commodore scene? Did it ever go away?

When I bought my first car back in the 1990s quality aftermarket car audio was big news. Just about every feature I read about in Street Commodores, Hot4s and any number of other car magazines carried its own weight in speakers, subs, amps and the like.

Things seemed to hit their peak at around the same time I started working in the magazine game – say, around 2003-2006. Installs were getting really crazy and emerging technologies like TV screens, games consoles and lighting equipment were really taking things to a whole new level; not to mention the fantastical fibreglass and MDF install jobs builders were dreaming up.

Lifemusicmedia.com recently published our photos and review of Periphery‘s gig at the Metro Theatre in Sydney on February 2, 2014. They were supported by Animals as Leaders. Below is our full review of the show, along with link to our gallery of 26 images on Flickr:

Even before Animals as Leaders take to the Metro stage, the venue is rapidly filling with excited, guitar-crazy punters. There are scores of Periphery shirts circulating and it’s almost impossible to find more than one of the same design – a testament to the band’s proactive approach to merchandise and self promotion.

Despite this, it’s clear that just as many of the assembled throng are here to see Tosin Abasi and co. perform their unique brand of instrumental, 8-string rock fusion. For what is really an odd instrumental line-up (both Abasi and fellow guitarist Javier Reyes playing 8-string Ibanez guitars and drummer Matt Garstka), the mix rings true and clear and the band do an excellent job of recreating tracks from their first two albums – announcing to the eager crowd that they’ve just finished work on album number three. Watching Abasi and Reyes navigate their large fret boards with such ease and confidence definitely makes you feel insignificant – Reyes’ incredible, simultaneous bass line and melody counterpoint work was particularly breathtaking.

Feature Cars: Phill Lander’s VW Syncro and Doka

09 Feb

Our photo shoot on Phill Lander’s VW Syncro and Doka is out now in issue 41 of VW Magazine Australia. Be sure to pick up a copy at your local newsagent and check it out.

Phil’s Syncro T3 was bought brand new in 1990 and has a tiny 58,000 original kilometers on the clock! It’s truly a museum piece, despite Phill driving it all over the country when he first bought it. The Doka was a tradies work hack and has couple hundred thousand on the odometer, but you wouldn’t know it. It’s also in pristine condition and drives like a dream.

As always, we’ve got a series of FREE desktop wallpaper images for you to enjoy. Simply CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to visit our Flickr page where all the goodies lay in wait for your visit.

Cover Shot: Gojira for Heavy Magazine

06 Feb

We just got the cover art for HEAVY magazine, issue 9, with our photo of French metal band Gojira on the front cover!

These photos were taken for another Aussie music magazine in 2012 and never run, mainly due to some poor planning and incompetence on their behalf (still a little bitter about it, after spending all day at the venue setting up, waiting and for nothing). I thought they’d never get run as a result, but here they are – AND on the front! Happy days! The Gojira guys were very polite and easy going. Amazing show, too. Be sure to catch them at Soundwave or with Mastodon and Baroness at the Sidewave in late Feb.

Photo Book: Automotive Photography Vol. 2 Now Available

03 Feb

Automotive Photography Vol. 2

To celebrate Hosking Industries’ fourth birthday, we knuckled down and finally finished the second volume of our Automotive Photography series of photo book, imaginatively called ‘Automotive Photography Vol. 2 2011-2013’.

It’s simply created through Blurb.com, but comes in at 160-pages like Vol. 1 and features a hard cover, dust jacket and Blurb’s top line of paper. It’s not cheap, but there’s nothing like having a real book of your own work in the house to look through and look back on down the track. While we don’t expect anyone else to want one at around AUS$200 a copy, you can have a look through the entire book for free by CLICKING HERE or on the image above. Hope you all like it!

Happy Birthday to Us: We’re Four!

01 Feb

Woot! We just realised it’s February 1. That means it’s Hosking Industries’ fourth birthday! Established on February 1, 2010, Hosking Industries was officially lodged with the government as a company for founder (OK, so it’s just me!) Ben Hosking to operate under, having gone freelance after seven years with Express Publications in Silverwater, NSW Australia. And boy, have those four years gone fast!

A quick glance at our records shows that in that time we’ve photographed just over 170 cars and bikes, written more than 550 articles for publication and shot over 30 gigs (we’ll be celebrating our birthday by photographing Periphery and Animals as Leaders tonight!).

The last 12 months saw us pick up a number of new clients, including Heavy Duty magazine, Cruzin and Gasoline, Muscle Mustangs, Vette, Camaro Now and VW Magazine Australia. Perhaps the biggest new client we hooked up with has been Custom Made Media Australia. With CMMA we’ve been able to work with Australian Home Technology and limit’d, as well as taking the helm of their new photography magazine, InFocus Australasia – an iPad native publication that is doing very well so far, 10 issues in.

To all our new and existing customers, a huge thanks for your continued business and support. Here’s to another four successful years!
