Feature Car: Leo Mortakis’ HDT VL Group A SS

30 Jul

Wow, we’ve really had a rash of red cars lately! Our photo shoot and feature story on Leo Mortakis’ HDT VL SS Group A is out now in issue 226 of Street Commodores magazine – on sale in newsagents everywhere. Go grab it!

Leo rebuilt the car – actually his father’s – himself in the garage at home under his business name of Muscle Car Restorations. It’s a genuine SS Group A, complete with Peter Brock’s maligned Energy Polarizor and the overall finish is better than brand new, but with a few finishing touches that his dad requested. be sure to read all about it in Street Commodores magazine.

Feature Car: Scott Bamford’s 1932 Ford Hi-Boy

23 Jul

Our photo shoot and feature story on Scott Bamford’s tough, supercharged 1932 Ford Hi-Boy is out now in the latest issue of Cruzin magazine. Some may recall the photo shoot we did on Scott and his dad’s hot rods way back in 2011 for Heavy Duty Hot Rods. You can see some pics from that shoot HERE.

Since then, Scott has rebuilt the 327ci SBC which now makes 624hp, thanks in part to the towering 6/71 blower on top. Be sure to read all about the car in issue 165 of Cruzin.

Opinion Piece: Get an Education (Street Commodores Editorial Column)

09 Jul

This is the 22nd in a regular series of editorial pieces we’ll be posting here on the blog, originally written by Hosking Industries’ Ben Hosking for Street Commodores magazine and other magazines he’s completed opinion pieces for. This column appeared in issue 190 of Street Commodores:

Get an Education (Written 17.08.11)

Want to dig deep into building a custom car but lack the skills? Go back to school.

As I was growing up I discovered the world of custom cars like most kids probably did. They had a relative who was into building or at least driving modified cars, or perhaps the mere sight and sound of a cool car like Knight Rider’s KITT was enough to get your pre-pubescent adrenaline gland pumping. Either way, for most of us cars ended up becoming something far greater than mere transport.

I think I glued together my first model car at around the age of seven or eight. That taught me quite a bit about the general anatomy of the motor car and how each major part related to the next. I also had my uncle’s impressive collection of mid-1960s to early ‘70s hot rod magazines to pore over whenever I visited (I’ve now got that wonderful collection with me here at home).

I really got most of my automotive education from books, magazines and model cars – at least up until I bought my first car and started working on that. For many of you at home, my story probably sounds pretty familiar: soaking up information and completing DIY projects at home that you picked up in car mags like Street Commodores.

Feature Bike: Savvas’ 2007 Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe

07 Jul

Issue 135 of Heavy Duty magazine is now on sale and includes our photo shoot and feature story on Savvas’ chrome-heavy 2007 Harley Davidson Deluxe. The story goes that Savvas grew up wishing he had the Chiko Roll girl’s black Harley from the poster that graced the walls of most fish and chip shops around the country. We’d say he’s got a whole lot more than that now! Be sure to read all about the chromed and pinstriped machine in Heavy Duty, out now.
