Feature Car: Chris Hickman’s Willys Coupe

27 Mar

Issue 13 of Heavy Duty Hot Rods is on-sale now and contains four photo shoots by Hosking Industries, including a shoot on Chris Hickman’s incredible, regularly driven Willys coupe, pictured here. We first saw Chris’ coupe at the first annual Autumnfest, a new rod and custom culture show in Taree, NSW Australia. In fact, the second event is coming up shortly, on the weekend of April 28 and 29, 2012. Check it out HERE.

Back to Chris’ Willys: powered by a 6.71-blown 350ci SBC, the beast makes around 500rwhp and looks every bit as menacing with its slammed stance and huge 15x10in rear hoops. The car is full of cool details, like the frenched Caddy tail lights and plenty more you can read about in Heavy Duty Hot Rods. Be sure to pick up a copy at your local.

As always, we’ve got a bunch of FREE desktop wallpaper versions of the six images here and strobist fans can find lighting information on each image’s caption on our Flickr page. Just CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to jump.

Feature Car: Daniel Cox’s 1936 Morris 8 Tudor

22 Mar

Now for something a little different! Novocastrian (someone from Newcastle, Australia, for the uninitiated) Daniel Cox built this way-cool 1936 Morris 8, inspired by the exaggerated proportions and out-there thinking of legends like Ed Roth. His wild creation is certainly a fitting testament to the twisted mind of the ‘Big Daddy’ and you’ll be able to read all about it’s journey from junk heap to hero in issue 13 of Heavy Duty Hot Rods, on-sale now.

Powered by a tunnel-rammed 350ci SBC and T350 (the venerable combo), the little British tudor must feel a bit like a go-kart on the road, but somehow Daniel has found a tasty visual balance with the car – a car that also boasts wicked Caddy tail lights, neat flames and gorgeous billet rims. Daniel scored an excellent location for the shoot at an old, still operational factory just outside of Newcastle that we dearly hope to be able to use again in the future. Don’t think for a second we’re gonna tell you where this one is!

As always, we’ve included strobist information (where applicable) and our EXIF data is always on show for those who want to know. You can download all six images as FREE desktop wallpaper images. Just CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to jump.

Feature Car: Tony and Joseph Scro’s 1928 Model-A Ford

19 Mar

One of our favourite shoots of 2011 has just been published in Heavy Duty Hot Rods issue 13, on sale now. Sadly the shoot was attributed to another shooter in the magazine, but we know it’s ours. The shoot is on Tony and Joseph Scro’s immaculate and beautiful 1928 Ford Model-A roadster, pictured below.

Tony and Joseph’s Model-A actually sits on a pair of ’32 chassis rails and wears a matching 1932 grille. under the bonnet you’ll find a 283ci SBC, fed by three 97 Strombergs on an Offy manifold. The combo is backed by a T350 and retro-chic Quick Change diff’. It’s a timeless, classic combo of parts and appearances and you can read all about it in issue 13 of Heavy Duty Hot Rods.

As always, we’ve included lighting info on each image for the Strobist fanatics out there and you should be able to find the EXIF data buried in there, somewhere too. We’ve included six FREE desktop wallpaper versions of the shots on our Flickr page. Just CLICK HERE or on the thumbs below to view and download them all!

Feature Car: Shannon ‘Walt’ Robertshaw’s 1965 Ford XP Delivery

13 Mar

Also featured in issue 46 of Brute Utes & Vans is our feature shoot on Shannon ‘Walt’ Robertshaw’s retro-cool 1965 Falcon sedan delivery. We found Shannon and his Ford at the Taren Point Rat Day on a couple of occasions and finally picked up the phone and arranged a shoot. It’s certainly a mild custom, with only a short selection of nice modifications to make it a reliable and eye-catching daily without the need for engineer’s papers.

Powered by a stocker 170ci Ford six-cylinder up front, the delivery boasts plenty of pin striping and rodding stickers as well as the obligatory Mexican blanket, drive-in speakers and white wall tyres. He and his faithful companion can be seen cruising his native Central Coast (NSW) area all the time and we loved the laid back, old-school vibes this car dished out. Be sure to pick up a copy of issue 46 of Brute Utes & Vans when it goes on sale shortly.

We shot the Falcon in Shannon’s workshop using Canon Speedlite flashes and we’ve listed the lighting information on each image’s caption on our Flickr page as usual. You can read all that and download desktop wallpaper versions of the images by CLICKING HERE or on the images below. Enjoy!

Feature Car: Michael Symonds’ Holden VU SS

09 Mar

Brute Utes magazine recently published our photo shoot and story on Michael Symonds’ 2001 Holden VU SS, known as IM25US (I’m too suss, for the number plate illiterate). You can read all about Michael and his ute in issue 46 of the magazine, on sale very soon.

The ute’s LS1 engine makes a healthy 415rwhp thanks to some fine tuning by Sam’s Performance in Padstow, NSW. It’s clearly when things get more graphic that Michael’s SS really shines, with plenty of evil air brushed murals along the flanks and under the bonnet. The all-blue interior has to be seen up close to truly appreciate.

As always, we’ve got a selection of desktop wallpaper images of the VU for you to view and download FREE. While most of the shoot was done using ambient light, you can find lighting information and EXIF data on each image’s caption on our Flickr page. Just CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to check it all out.

Promo Shoot: Gojira for Australian Hysteria Magazine

07 Mar

Gojira Promo Shoot

I’d been wanting to get into doing band promo shoots since going freelance back at the start of 2010. While I hadn’t made much of an effort to get out there and drum up that kind of business, it was definitely something on my to-do list. Last week, I got my chance to dip a toe in thanks to the guys at Australian Hysteria magazine.

OK, so perhaps shooting an international band like Gojira (from France) is a little more than a ‘dip’ into the promo shoot waters! being my first band promo shoot and being a fan, I was pretty nervous about the shoot in the lead-up, so I made sure I wrangled in an assistant (thanks to Jackson for his time and help!)  for the day and got there early to check out the location and set up some lighting options and test them before the band got there.

I only used simple two-light setups for all these shots, taken in two different parts of the same location for different looks. I ultimately had the band’s attention for no more than 10 minutes, which I would assume is normal for this kind of shoot – but I got what I needed. I also got wrangled into shooting the band with their equipment for another section of the same magazine, which was cool. it also meant we got to watch Mastodon’s sound check while waiting for Gojira to arrive.

You can find lighting into on each image’s caption and be sure to check out an upcoming issue of Australian Hysteria magazine for the published shots when their new album comes out. Don’t worry, we’ll let you know when it gets published! CLICK HERE or on the image above to check out the shots. One of them is a FREE desktop wallpaper. Enjoy.

Feature Car: Ziggy’s Hot Rods 1968 Ford Mustang

03 Feb

Hosking Industries had the rare pleasure of photographing the 1968 Mustang Fastback known as Warhorse 427 for Modified Mustangs & Fords magazine in the USA last year. This incredible custom vehicle was the recipient of 5000 man-hours in the bodywork alone! Built by the talented team at Ziggy’s Hot Rods in Medowie, about two hours north of Sydney, Australia, the off-white Fastback has wowed audiences since its debut at MotorEx around 18 months ago.

The car, owned by Mike Kluver, is featured in the March 2012 issue of Modified Mustangs & Fords, with the feature story also written by us. You can visit their website HERE.

We shot the car close to the Ziggy’s workshop one steamy Summer evening. Toward the end of the shoot it became so humid that the UV filter on the front of our lens started to fog up! We rattled off more images than we’ve probably ever snapped for any other car, such is the detail inherent in the Mustang and today we bring you six FREE desktop wallpaper-sized images for your own enjoyment.

Strobist fans will find lighting information on each image’s caption on our Flickr page. CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to view and download the shots.

Feature Bike: Anthony’s Harley Davidson Heritage Softail

23 Jan

It’s a 1340cc Evolution-powered beast with aftermarket power modifications, Brembo brakes and airbags in the rear suspension to get the right stance. Of course, the green flamed pin striping looks killer, too. Be sure to pick up a copy of the magazine to read all about it.
