Live Photos: Mastodon + Gojira + Kvelertak @ Sydney’s Hi-FI Bar – March 1, 2012

04 May

A series of 40 images from Mastodon‘s gig at Sydney’s Hi-Fi bar at Moore Park on march 1, 2012 – shot for Australian Hysteria magazine. The concert was one of the many Sidewave shows happening as part of the huge Soundwave festival tour that rolled through town at the end of February 2012.

The band were supported by Gojira and Kvelertak. Hosking Industries was lucky enough to shoot some promo shots of Gojira before the gig. You can see the results HERE.

The venue was newly opened and the stage lighting was horribly dark through each of the three band’s sets, which was a shame. There were more shooters in the pit than I’ve ever seen and all were complaining about the darkness. CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to view and download.

Live Gallery: Lostprophets + Kids in Glass Houses + Versaemerge @ Metro Theatre

24 Apr

The annual Soundwave Festival brought a ton of great international bands to Sydney through February and March of 2012 and if the festival itself wasn’t enough to get you smiling, there was also a full week’s worth of official ‘Sidewave’ gigs where the various bands would team up and put on additional shows in smaller venues. One such Sidewave was headlined by Lostprophets at Sydney’s Metro Theatre on February 28, 2012.

We shot this gig for Australian Hysteria magazine and the band were supported by Kids in Glass Houses from Wales and American band Versaemerge. We weren’t asked to review this gig, suffice it to say that all three bands put on a great show with plenty of energetic performances by each and having watched the previous night’s show with Angels & Airwaves at the UNSW Roundhouse, it was nice to see three bands with singers who could sing.

Anyway, check out 32 images from the gig by CLICKING HERE or on the thumbnails below and enjoy!

Live Photos: Angels & Airwaves + Madina Lake + Framing Hanley @ UNSW Roundhouse

11 Apr

Issue 9 of Australian Hysteria magazine has just gone on sale here in Australia, including our live review and photos from the recent Angels & Airwaves gig at the UNSW Roundhouse in Sydney on Monday February 27, 2012. This was one of the many ‘Sidewaves’ that took place around Sydney in the wake of the Soundwave Festival and the band were supported by America’s Madina Lake and Framing Hanley.

Review excerpt:
“As lovely as songs like ‘Saturday Love’, Everything’s Magic’ and ‘Call to Arms’ are, there’s just no escaping the fact that they’d be a far greater force with a real singer at the mic’.”

“Closing a 14 song strong set with the epic ‘The War’, Angels & Airwaves left the stage and the sweaty, wasted crowd in the their wake with high fives all round for a job well done. It’s nice to know there’s life beyond Blink 182 and penis jokes. Maybe.”

Promo Shoot: Gojira for Australian Hysteria Magazine

07 Mar

Gojira Promo Shoot

I’d been wanting to get into doing band promo shoots since going freelance back at the start of 2010. While I hadn’t made much of an effort to get out there and drum up that kind of business, it was definitely something on my to-do list. Last week, I got my chance to dip a toe in thanks to the guys at Australian Hysteria magazine.

OK, so perhaps shooting an international band like Gojira (from France) is a little more than a ‘dip’ into the promo shoot waters! being my first band promo shoot and being a fan, I was pretty nervous about the shoot in the lead-up, so I made sure I wrangled in an assistant (thanks to Jackson for his time and help!)  for the day and got there early to check out the location and set up some lighting options and test them before the band got there.

I only used simple two-light setups for all these shots, taken in two different parts of the same location for different looks. I ultimately had the band’s attention for no more than 10 minutes, which I would assume is normal for this kind of shoot – but I got what I needed. I also got wrangled into shooting the band with their equipment for another section of the same magazine, which was cool. it also meant we got to watch Mastodon’s sound check while waiting for Gojira to arrive.

You can find lighting into on each image’s caption and be sure to check out an upcoming issue of Australian Hysteria magazine for the published shots when their new album comes out. Don’t worry, we’ll let you know when it gets published! CLICK HERE or on the image above to check out the shots. One of them is a FREE desktop wallpaper. Enjoy.

Live Gallery: The Casualties @ Manning Bar, Sydney (02.12.11)

12 Feb

Australian Hysteria magazine has just gone on sale with one of our photos of USA’s The Casualties. Sadly is was incorrectly attributed to someone else, but we know it was ours. To celebrate, here’s a selection of 23 images from the gig, supported by The Scam and Topnovil. Pretty sure The Scam were off chops for their set!

We didn’t review the gig, but we can attest to quality performances by both Topnovil and The Casualties. Apparently The Casualties had tried two or three times before to get into the country, but had visa issues due to the singer’s Colombian background. I think the less-than-capacity crowd could attest to the band’s eagerness to make up for the trouble.

Live Photos: Seether + Numbers Radio – Metro Theatre, Sydney (05.02.12)

07 Feb

TheAUreview has just published our live concert photos and short review on the Seether gig that took place at the Metro Theatre on Sunday Feb 5, 2012 here in Sydney. Seether was supported by Brisbane’s Numbers Radio and the bands played to an almost full house. Check out our photos by CLICKING HERE or on the image below. Here’s an snippet from the review:

…Running perfectly on time, Seether took to the stage in classic form, with the tattered Metro curtains slowly rolling back to reveal the three piece shrouded in darkness. Sadly this dim lighting prevailed for much of the show, with only momentary bursts of light illuminating the band here and there throughout their set…

Mike Patton's Mondo Cane - Live Review

theAUreview.com just published our review of Mike Patton’s Mondo Cane at Sydney’s State Theatre on January 17, 2012 – supported by Melbourne’s Anthony Patreas. Check out the full review by CLICKING HERE or on the image.

…Mike Patton needs no introduction. His history with bands like Faith No More and Mr Bungle has virtually made him a household name. His other projects such as Fantomas, Tomahawk and Peeping Tom have further secured his reputation as an uncompromising, twisted and true pioneering genius…

Interview: Dead and Divine for Hysteria Magazine

14 Oct

Dead and DivineWe recently had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Tobin, vocalist of Canada’s Dead and Divine for Australian Hysteria magazine. The interview was published in issue 6 of the mag’ which went on sale this month. If you haven’t picked up a copy before, we really recommend it. It’s literally packed to the brim with interviews, reviews and news on many various heavy music sub-genres with something for everyone. Anyway, here’s the feature as it appears in the magazine:

They say that with age comes a greater sense of perspective and often more confidence in one’s own abilities. Basically, you become more comfortable in yourself and what you’re about. Clearly this must be true of the guys in Canada’s Dead and Divine: a band often lumped in with the crowded ‘metalcore’ scene and the narrow field of view its fans can sometimes display.

On their third full-length release – Antimacy – the Canadian quintet find themselves introducing more layers to their trademark sound. While this type of artistic growth and maturity can often be seen as a negative by fans, it’s something founder member and vocalist Matt Tobin is pretty chuffed about. “This time around we were like, ‘let’s try something new and let’s do what we were afraid to do with the last record’,” Tobin says. “At that point we didn’t care anymore and just wanted to make a record that we all loved. If we ended up with a part that sounded like something we normally wouldn’t do, we did it anyway if we liked how it sounded.”

With the group’s previous outings staying pretty true to formula, including 2008’s debut The Fanciful and 2009’s The Machines We Are, there are more obvious hints of primary song writers Matt and Chris LeMasters’ (guitar) childhood influences poking through into the 11 tracks that comprise Antimacy. “A lot of us grew up in the ‘90s, so that’s what we were raised on,” Tobin says. “I grew up on the Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, silverchair – they were and still are one of my favourite bands – the deftones… they were some of the biggest influences on me. A lot of grunge, too.”

Photo Gallery: Blind Guardian @ Metro Theatre, Sydney – 30.09.11

14 Oct

We had the pleasure of shooting Germany’s iconic power metal band Blind Guardian at the Metro Theatre in Sydney, Australia at the end of September. They were supported by Australia’s premier exponent of the style, Black Majesty who also got a rousing response from the full house.

Hosking Industries were shooting for theAUReview.com and we can now bring you the gallery direct, with the images also now hosted on our Flickr page in a slightly higher resolution. Sadly we arrived too late to catch opening act EYEFEAR, but you’ll find a good gallery of images from both Black Majesty and Blind Guardian by CLICKING HERE or on the thumbnails below. 1990s Revival: Spineshank – Strictly Diesel (c1998)

09 Oct

New band Spineshank are proteges of one Mr Dino Cazares (Fear Factory). They play a style that melds most of the popular, current heavy styles into one convenient package.Their sound reminds me a lot of Sepultura in terms of phrasing  and also their general guitar/bass sound. The way they enter their choruses also reminds me of the Seps boys.

From track one until track 14, this band show as much diversity as  a band who have had much more time to grow and mature as artists much older. Yet, these guys look no older than me (about 21), not to mention the live reviews these fellows have been receiving with have been very positive to say the least. If recommendations mean anything to you, then one from Feature Factory and Coal Chamber much have some credibility! Dino from FF and Dez from Coal Chamber both lay claim to supporting these lads and when you listen to this disc, you see why. Roadrunner would be proud of this signing.

Overall, the sound is modern and phat, thick and pounding. There are attempts at industrial crossover in terms of a few rhythm loops here and there, but it isn’t really convincing. I’d be surprised if they used them live – let’s say that. All you hard music fans out there have probably heard of this by now, but if you haven’t heard Strictly Diesel yet, get your arse down to your local and get it before you miss out. It’s hot stuff.
