Feature Car: Smith Concepts’ 1965 Chevrolet C10 Fleetside

13 Apr

Check out Smith Concepts’ 1965 Chevrolet C10. I’ve had the pleasure of photographic the work of Kyle Smith at Smith Concepts many times over the last decade or so. In fact, I think my second ever photo shoot in 2010 was of Kyle’s white Valiant ute and his funky Yamaha rat bike (he’s progressed onto big twins since).
Since then I’ve had several custom bikes, a few hot rods and workshop shoots out at his Brookvale, NSW shop. But it’s this ’65 Chevrolet C10 Fleetside that Kyle is perhaps most proud of – at least until the next one is built.
Slammed on its arse and painted in a deep, deep DNA Cherry Black, Smith Concepts’ 1965 Chevrolet C10 is powered by a 350ci SBC and boasts a ton of incredible detail. It was also built largely by, and managed by Smith Concepts – the shop’s first big all-in project. Plus, it was completed in just 12 months! No wonder Kyle is so proud.
The shoot featured in the March 2021 issue of Street Machine.

Feature Car: Danny Probert’s Ford XD Falcon

07 Apr

Danny Probert’s Ford XD Falcon has certainly been one of the more original builds I’ve had the task of photographing recently. From the outside it might look like a pretty typical XD Falcon that’s been slammed on its arse. But before long you’ve been pulled into a black hole of detail and clever engineering.
It’s a drift car, so yeah, it’s a bit rough around the edges. Don’t go looking for tidy panel gaps. instead, concentrate on what it DOES have: a 600hp Barra turbo six, ridiculous steering lock, a full cage, no boot floor and custom front and rear suspension (the rear is IRS).
My shoot was featured in the March 2021 issue of Street Machine. For the photography fans, the main exterior shots were lit with a single Godox AD600 through a large strip box, lighting painting with multiple exposures and edited and composited in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Feature Car: Jonathan Danaskos’ 1965 Ford Mustang

01 Apr

Not many cars succeed in being more than one or two things. Some cars make a boatload of horsepower but look pretty ordinary. Others have immaculate interiors but the engine bay lets it down… you get the idea.
Jonathan Danaskos’ 1965 Ford Mustang ticks just about any box you might like to mark it against: it has smooth paint and a smooth engine bay, it has a great interior (custom, yet off the shelf from the USA!), it boasts an awesome stance on those 15in Weld V-series rims and yeah… it makes a ton of power, too. 620rwhp, to be exact. On an earlier, less powerful combo the car ran a 10.9sec ET and he’s hoping to deep into the 10s next time out. What a street car!
My photo shoot on the coupe was featured in the March 2021 issue of Street Machine.

Customs 4 Cancer: Harley Davidson Raffle Bike

23 Mar

I haven’t photographed many motorcycles over the last few years. The number of magazines has dropped and budgets have continued to fall, so I went where the money still is instead. I really like shooting bikes, though. They’re usually easier for a start: smaller panels, smaller in general. That means less worry about reflections and the size of your locations.
Either way, I enjoyed shooting this custom Harley CVO from Norm Fraser’s. It’s being raffled off by Customs 4 Cancer soon, so hit them up for your chance to win it.
For the enthusiastic shooters out there, I lit this with a single flash in a large strip box and multiple hits, composited in Photoshop. There’s also a single bare flash hit from the left that is adding a bit of fill on the metallic grey paintwork. I would have done it in my usual fashion with an LED panel and long exposures, but the location was too bright. By using flash, I could run a much shorter exposure time and make the location seem darker than it was – helping the bike to pop.

Feature Car: Steve Bowman’s 1965 Chevy II Nova Sport

17 Mar

I photographed Steve Bowman’s classic and gorgeous 1965 Chevy II Nova Sport Coupe for the February 2021 issue of Street Magazine. This car boasts a truly timeless combination of parts and colours that should mean Steve can simply cruise and enjoy this sweet machine for many years to come.
An original 327 car, it’s now powered by a 525hp 383ci SBC and backed by a T700 and 9in, the coupe features a smooth engine bay, Weld Draglites and a smooth , colour-coded metal dash with classic black leather trim.

My photo shoot on Steve Roussis’ 1970 Ford XY Falcon appeared in the January 2021 issue of Street Machine magazine. Powered by a 880hp 443ci Windsor from BK Engines, it’s a potent street car that has run a PB of 9.17sec @ 146mph.

Cover Car: Dean Rickard’s 1969 Holden HT Monaro

03 Mar

Car owners often ask me the same question when I’m shooting their own cars: “What is the best car you’ve ever photographed?”
It’s a ridiculously hard question to answer definitively. The best how? Best engine bay, best paint, best stance, best trim, best race car, best ‘cool’ factor, best… you get the idea. A lot of cars have been amazing for different reasons.
perhaps that was until I got tasked with photographing the latest creation from Down Town Kustoms in Taree, NSW. Dean Rickard’s 1969 Holden HT Monaro GTS is off-the-charts in just about every regard. The bodywork still numbs my brain to this day; the interior is somehow understated, elegant and show-conquering all at the same time; the engine bay is to die for despite there being no blower or turbos in sight and the undercarriage is a work of art, even though it isn’t all glossy or chromed.
If you can find one, pick up a copy of the January 2021 issue of Street Machine to read the whole incredible story.

Feature Car: John Dennis’ 1973 Ford Escort

22 Feb

John Dennis’ 1973 Ford Escort is a genre-busting example of what can happen when you forget about current trends and build from your gut. powered by an old-school FJ20T and slammed on its arse, the Esky is making 260rwhp on a run-in tune (25psi planned on E85) and boasts a host of awesome engineering ideas.
Mini tubs (allowing 17x10in Foregline rims under the bum), pumped guards and a Spartan interior almost devoid of soft furnishings makes this one early small-Ford to remember! The shoot was featured in the January 2021 issue of Street Machine.

Feature Car: Steve Sterjovski’s Holden VL Calais

18 Feb

Steve Sterjovski’s Holden VL Calais wears license plates that pretty much sum up the entire build. From the insane butt-dragging stance and the nutso 22x13in Simmons FR rims to the monster 3.2L RB26-based turbo six that makes some 1000rwhp thanks in part to the massive 94mm Pro Mod turbo – this VL means ‘war’.
Things don’t settle down once you open the door and get in, either. Step inside and you’ll find a cabin drenched in bone leather, complete with cage, custom fibreglass dash and so much more.
The photo shoot was featured in the 2020 Street Machine Yearbook.
