Learn How to Automotive Light Paint!

16 Jan

Learn how to automotive light paint with one of Australia’s top exponents of the style. Ben Hosking is now offering one-on-one and small-group classes in the greater Newcastle and Sydney regions.

Learn all the necessary tips and techniques you need for creating professional-level automotive light painting images. From the equipment you need to the techniques to creating beautifully-lit scenes and the secrets that make a memorable image.

Each hands-on session will be tailored to where you and I think you need the most help. Or it can be an encompassing course that starts right at the beginning – or anywhere in between. All that will be worked out prior to the lessons, which will be a minimum of two hours, at a time and a location within your general area (where possible). I’ll also try and set the lesson after one of my proper magazine shoots. So you can come along and watch that process as part of the coaching.

I’m also offering more general educational sessions in automotive photography techniques like strobist and even basic camera skills should you feel you need it.

Contact me today HERE if you’re interested in learning how to automotive light paint and we can discuss your specific needs, questions and desired outcomes.

Feature Car: Mark Cirillo’s 1974 Holden LJ Torana

31 Dec

Mark Cirillo’s 1974 Holden LJ Torana was living in his dreams for almost 20 years before he got the chance to actually own it. Now that it’s his, Mark has restored the LJ Torana coupe – transforming it into his perfect aussie muscle vision, including a tough 355ci Holden stroker and Ford 9in rear end.

Incredibly, Mark was able to preserve the car’s decades-old paintwork and the use of the Mawer three-piece 13in rims just adds to to the retro appeal. Step inside Mark Cirillo’s 1974 Holden LJ Torana and the vintage theme continues thanks to the largely GTR-spec’ upholstery.

The car was featured in the November issue of Street Machine magazine.

Feature Car: Paul Knowles’ Holden VK Commodore

19 Dec

I photographed Paul Knowles’ Holden VK Commodore years ago for Street Commodores when it was blue-over-silver and powered by a hot Holden V8. Several years later and the car has been fully rebuilt thanks to a horror smash.

Now resplendent in full white paint with contrasting black Simmons FR rims, the car looks totally on-trend. The old cream interior has been replaced with an all-black leather and suede affair to match the Simmons and the Warspeed 403ci L98-based stroker. Where most opt for a blower or turbos these days, Paul Knowles’ Holden VK Commodore is all motor, but looks the business with that tunnel ram poking through the bonnet, topped by a pair of 750cfm Holley carbs.

Out back, a braced, sheet-metal 9in houses 35-spline axles and 4.11:1 gears which should cope with any punishment Paul dishes out onto those poor FR20s and Pirelli P-Zero tyres. The car was featured in the November 2019 issue of Street Machine.

Feature Car: Lexus Aplin’s 2013 Volkswagen Beetle

17 Dec

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing a number of Volkswagen Beetles over the years, but never one of the new generation. So I was pretty excited when I saw Lexus Aplin’s 2013 Volkswagen Beetle sitting with its belly on the ground at the 2019 VW Nationals. A call to Craig at VWMA secured the car a feature story and we got to work arranging a photo shoot.
With an extensive Maxton body kit, Airlift 3P Performance Suspension kit and TSW Sebring wheels, Lexus Aplin’s 2013 Volkswagen Beetle is completely transformed from the tired stocker it was when Lexus found the car. Inside, a Sirocco R interior makes things far more sporty and the whole car gets more oopmh thanks to a Stage 1 APR tune and intake upgrade that nets the car around 30kW extra power. Further improvements come from a custom 2.5in cat-back exhaust.
My photos were features in issue 64 of VW Magazine Australia.

Feature Car: Tim Saliba’s Holden VP Commodore

06 Dec

Tim Saliba’s Holden VP Commodore was featured in the October issue of Street Machine. I’d shot the car once before for another magazine, but Tim has since made some further improvements, both to the parts list but also driveability improvements. The airbagged, 393ci Holden V8-powered sedan looks sweet in its HSV Senator body kit and riding super low on the Simmons FR19s. Inside, it’s all covered… in shale-coloured leather, that is. Dash, door trims, Recaro seats, centre console – everything is drenched in leather. Even the boot install that also boasts a pair of 12in subs is leather-clad. Tim Saliba’s Holden Commodore is one gorgeous machine!

Feature Car: Shadi Tobaji’s Ford TC Cortina

26 Nov

There’s no doubting that a Ford TC Cortina is one of the more unusual choices for a street machine. But when you build one as clean and tough as Shadi Tobaji’s 443ci Dart Windsor-powered sedan, you can’t argue with the validity of his choice! Making a solid 889hp on C85 ethanol-based fuel, this 8sec machine can get the front wheels high into the air if Shadi forgets to fit the wheelie bars!

Shadi’s Ford Cortina was featured in the October 2019 issue of Street Machine.

Live Review: Cancer Bats @ Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle – October 11, 2019

20 Nov

SEE GALLERY HERE

I was lucky enough to witness Canada’s Cancer Bats in action back sometime around 2013 and was struck by the band’s intensity and obvious enjoyment with what they were doing. That was a Sidewave at Sydney’s Hi-Fi Bar supporting Bullet for My Valentine – which in this reviewer’s mind was a bit of an odd pairing, but whatever…

Seeing the band tonight in the Cambridge Hotel‘s diminutive pressure-cooker of a front room seemed to amplify the intensity of the band’s performance. With no photo pit, I was shooting from the mosh – experiencing the effect they were having on the audience first hand. The band tore up the stage with a set list bursting with tracks from just about their entire back catalogue, with highlights including ‘Sorceress’ and ‘Hail Destroyer’ from the album of the same name and ‘Gatekeeper’ and ‘Space and Time’ from latest album ‘The Spark That Moves’.

As a band not known for their five-minute-plus prog epics, they move through their 15-song set list rapid fire, broken up with witty banter from frontman Liam Cormier, including some classic Aussie piss-taking that the crowd laps up, despite being the brunt of the jokes. All in all, a great way to spend a rainy night in Newcastle.

Feature Car: Tomi Vatavuk’s 1974 Ford XB Falcon

20 Nov

If there’s a nicer XB Ford Falcon out there, I certainly haven’t photographed it! I got to photograph Tomi’s incredible ‘SOKOL’ Falcon sedan for the October issue of Street Machine. Perhaps the best thing about the XB – which includes a custom rear splitter/air dam, smoothed engine bay and plethora of custom billet and carbon fibre pieces – is that Tomi was able to do a lot of the build himself!

On top of being able to hang out with such a nice car, and a nice owner (who also happened to play guitar and like heavy music!), was being able to shoot the car in such a clean workshop. I personally have never seen such a clean work space. Especially given that besides handling custom work, it also serves as a regular servicing workshop. Look at that floor!

Cover Car: Joe Tyler’s 1964 EH Holden Wagon

29 Oct

I was presented with a fresh challenge for this photo shoot on Joe Tyler’s – one that I’d been meaning to do more of for years: car-to-car tracking shots. The brief was to capture the balls-out, blown 416ci LS3-powered ’64 wagon on the street for the front cover of Street Machine. A ton of research on locations, technique and a borrowed lens with image stabilisation later and this is the result. The car appeared on the front of the October 2019 issue.

Cover Car: Fabion Corio’s 1962 VW Karmann Ghia

24 Oct

My photo shoot on Fabion Corio’s pristine 1962 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was featured on the front cover of the latest issue of VW Magazine Australia, which is still on sale now. Powered by a 1776cc engine with twin Kadron carbs and custom manifolds, the car sits nice and low and looked beautiful as the sun went down during our shoot on Sydney’s south-eastern shores.
