Photo Gallery: Pinky’s Carpark Showdown Round 1

01 Feb

We attend a lot of car shows. Most of the time we’re there to cover the event for one of Australia’s many excellent performance car magazines. Over the weekend we got out to two events, including the Lady Luck festival in Katoomba and Pinky’s Carpark Showdown Round 1 in Mount Pritchard, NSW Australia.

On this occasion we were out looking for potential feature cars and as a result, the coverage we captured on the day won’t see the light of day in print. That’s unfortunate for us and good news for you, because it means you get to see the photos straight away!

Click on the thumbnails or THIS LINK to see a photo gallery of almost 100 images from the show!

It’s Our Birthday! Hosking Industries Turns 1

01 Feb

Today marks the first birthday of Hosking Industries. Founded on February 1, 2010 the company was started to house the many freelance activities of its creator Ben Hosking.

Having spent the previous seven years working full time for Sydney magazine publisher Express Publications and having recently left the company to work on his own; Ben chose the company format to allow him the potential to expand over the following years into any shape he wished – hence the relatively ambiguous company name. So far his activities have spanned the realms of performance automotive publishing, music journalism, graphic and web design, photographic and printing services and even the odd guitar lesson.

Our first 12 months have positively flown by in a whirlwind of success we couldn’t have dreamed and our blog has done exceptionally well. So thank you to all who’ve stopped by to check us out, download some free texture images or keep up to date with what we’ve been doing. You can bet we’ll have plenty more for you over the course of the next 12 months!

2011 will see dozens more feature cars photographed and written by Hosking Industries as well as other photographic excursions like portraiture and weddings, not to mention private car shoots. We’ll have another year’s worth of free texture images and we’ll also be endeavouring to continue our relatively short lived news stories on the automotive and music worlds – and anything else that takes our fancy.

So cheers and thanks for your support so far. We look forward to bringing you plenty more in 2011!

Ben Hosking

Feature Photography: Rat Bikes for Best Aussie Choppers Magazine

02 Dec

Our feature photo shoot and article on the Evolution Motorsport custom rat bobber motorcycles has been published in the latest issue of Best Aussie Choppers magazine – an Australian publication that’s distributed nationwide.

The Evolution bikes are all based on inexpensive Japanese small-capacity street bikes that are legal for L and P-platers. Proprietor Paul McKinnon says he was initially influenced by the custom scene in Japan, but is now taking more and more inspiration from the retro bobbers usually powered by more conventional power plants.

Based in Brookvale, NSW Australia, Evolution have a number of completed bikes for sale at very reasonable prices. Conversely, they can build one for you to your own personal specs.

Enjoy the photos and be sure to pick up a copy of Best Aussie Choppers at your local newsstand. CLICK HERE or on the images to see a high-resolution version including FREE desktop wallpapers of the bikes in 1280 resolution!

Photo of the Day: ‘Firewoman’ Triptych

'Firewoman' - Fire Dancing Lady

An older series of photos that I took of my aunt Jane whilst fire dancing at her house in Taree on the Mid-north coast of New South Wales a couple of years ago. There were others, but I like these three together.

Image of the Day: Nissan S15 Drifting at Supernats 16

Nissan S15 Silvia Drifting

I’ve been getting a fair bit of panning shot practice in lately whilst shooting cars for feature spreads in various magazines (I’ll post some shots from those as they’re published). I got a ton of practice at the recent Supernats 16 event at Eastern Creek Raceway in Sydney, NSW Australia; where I scored this shot of an S15 Nissan Silvia drifting on the main circuit.

Interview: Mitch Lucker of Suicide Silence for theAUreview.com

Suicide Silence Interview with Mitch Lucker

theAUreview.com have just uploaded my interview with Mitch Lucker, singer with the USA death metal band Suicide Silence. Formed in Riverside, California as a side project in 2002, Suicide Silence have polarised opinions with their unique slant on death metal. Lumped in with the deathcore crowd, singer Mitch Lucker is keen to separate themselves from fractious sub-genres; preferring to be known simply as a heavy metal band. Currently touring on the back of their brilliant ‘No Time to Bleed’ album, Ben Hosking speaks with the affable vocalist about touring, their upcoming new album and live DVD, growing up with a metal head for a father and working with famed producer Machine.

CD Review: Sevendust – ‘Cold Day Memory’

04 Nov

Sevendust - Cold Day Memory‘Cold Day Memory’ marks the ultimate return to form for the Atlanta, Georgia quintet, after less stellar recent releases like ‘Next’ and ‘Alpha’. Given that these albums were written and recorded during a period when guitarist Clint Lowery had departed the group (returning for 2008’s ‘Chapter VII’); you’d be forgiven for believing he was the spark that lights the band’s song writing fire.

Lajon Witherspoon’s mammoth voice soars over the bottom-heavy riff-fest that Sevendust have become renown for – a combination that is finished off with choruses likely to stick in your brain long after the 12 tracks of ‘Cold Day…’ are over. It’s a typically layered listen, with the album opening with the epically heavy ‘Splinter’ and closer ‘Strong Arm Broken’. In between, tracks like ‘Unravelling’, ‘Last Breath’ and ‘Confessions’ are reminiscent of Sevendust’s early classics ‘Home’ and ‘Animosity’. It’s all killer and no filler.

CD Review: Disturbed – ‘Asylum’

04 Nov

Disturbed - AsylumLove them or hate them, Disturbed have forged out their own distinct sound over their last four studio albums – one that’s immediately recognisable. On their fifth and latest, ‘Asylum’, Disturbed certainly don’t reinvent their wheel; however they do well to continue the development of their song writing skills and there are a ton of hooks prevalent within.

The disc opens up with the rather subdued instrumental ‘Remnants’ that seamlessly morphs into the title track boasting fist-pumping signature Disturbed staccato riffing and singer David Drayman’s equally trademark grunts. It’s hard-driving metal for the masses with a slick and polished production that has enough of the edges rounded smooth to land it deep within the mainstream. This means it’ll probably be too safe for the more hardcore metal fans.

Ultimately, it’s more of the same from the Chicago quartet; but they do what they do very well and you’ll be rewarded for your purchase by epic, soaring choruses and catchy-as-hell riffage.
