Our photo shoot and feature story on the Webby’s Speed Shop Model-A Ford truck is in this issue of Cruzin magazine – on sale now. As per one of our recent blog posts, the shoot actually made the front cover, our first for Cruzin.

The original, steel truck has been part of Webby’s collection for years and has just undergone a full rebuild at his Carrington, NSW workshop. Powered by a twin-throttle HSV V8, it’s built for the road and has seen plenty of kilometres over the years, hauling parts and attending shows all over the East Coast of Australia. Oops! We forgot to post out photos and live review of Devildriver‘s headlining gig at the HiFi in Sydney on September 6, 2014. D’oh! Originally published on lifemusicmedia.com, you’ll find a full gallery of images by CLICKING HERE or on the thumbnails above. Enjoy our full review below:

With a line waiting out front that stretched around the corner and up the street, there was no question tonight’s show with US metal bands Whitechapel and Devildriver was going to be a brutal show. White it’s unfortunate that most of those people would miss the opening act due to the HiFi’s super slow entry process (to the extent that the tour manager would have to delay Whitechapel’s start time until everyone was allowed in well past 9pm), Whitechapel and Devildriver no doubt made every single punter in the full room forget about any annoying delays.

Feature Bike: Savvas’ 2007 Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe

07 Jul

Issue 135 of Heavy Duty magazine is now on sale and includes our photo shoot and feature story on Savvas’ chrome-heavy 2007 Harley Davidson Deluxe. The story goes that Savvas grew up wishing he had the Chiko Roll girl’s black Harley from the poster that graced the walls of most fish and chip shops around the country. We’d say he’s got a whole lot more than that now! Be sure to read all about the chromed and pinstriped machine in Heavy Duty, out now.

Feature Car: Mark Sullivan’s Ford Mustang Fastback

10 Jun

Our photo shoot on Mark Sullivan‘s awesome DIY Mustang Fastback ended up being two firsts for us: it was the first car we photographed using the light painting technique and it also ended up being our first international cover car! The June 2014 issue of Modified Mustangs & Fords hit the stands a short time ago in the USA with our rig shot of Mark’s Mustang taking pride and place on the front.

As an added bonus, the photo shoot also appears in the first issue of ‘Revhead Extreme Performance’ magazine, which is on Aussie newsstands now. So no one needs to miss out reading all about the car. Mark built the Mustang largely himself in his Tardis-like shed on the Central Coast of NSW, including the smart two-tone paint and extensive ‘blacked out’ anti-chrome look. Be sure to find a copy of MM&F or Revhead and read all about it.

Lifemusicmedia.com got us into Killswitch Engage‘s headlining show at Sydney’s UNSW Roundhouse on Aparil 21, supported by Kill Devil Hill. We can now bring you our gallery of 24 images from the gig, as well as our review of the performance. CLICK HERE or on the images above to jump to the gallery:

Last time this reviewer was lucky enough to see Killswitch Engage was at what was then called the Forum at Moore Park (now the HiFi). It was a sideshow to another festival and the bill included Divine Heresy and Shadows Fall. It was a remarkable show housed within a diminutive venue when the band was fronted by the mighty Howard Jones – who, at one point in the show climbed the speaker stack and proceeded to fall into the crowd below. The anticipation level was high for tonight’s show.

Opening things up was Kill Devil Hill. The not-really-supergroup (featuring Rex Brown from Pantera and Down on bass, Johnny Kelly from Type o Negative on drums and ex-Pissing Razors singer Dewey Bragg) have some fine pedigree behind them, but veer away from their collective reference points with a driving rock and roll style dissimilar to anything from any of those three bands.

Sadly – and despite some excellent stage craft – the songs largely lack the magnetism and dynamic movement found in their former brands’ song writing. Bragg’s repeated reference to Pantera seemed a little unnecessary as well, with the band going so far as to covering ‘Mouth for War’ to close out what was an entertaining set, but one that left us wanting.

Lifemusicmedia.com published our image gallery and live review of the Korn and Rob Zombie double-header at Luna Park’s Big Top in Sydney on Feb 24, 2014 – supported by Mushroomhead. The show was a side show to the annual Soundwave Festival. CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails to check out our gallery of 38 images and read our review below:

What a freakin’ line up! Tonight’s Soundwave sideshow has sold out Luna Park’s Big Top and had punters lining up around the venue since 9am. It’s hardly surprising when you have Nu Metal legends Korn and comic super villain Rob Zombie headlining the same bill.

Opening tonight’s festivities are the masked crazies Mushroomhead. While their sound may not completely live up to their evil image, they offer an interesting three vocal assault, combining rap, screams and melodic vocals over a thickened bed of crushing riffs and soaring choruses. Tonight’s performance quickly whips up the early crowd, with all three singers launching into the crowd at one point.

This reviewer was on hand at the Hordern Pavilion many, many moons ago when Korn first toured this country. They band was a total revelation at the time, leading the way for an army of rip-off nu metal bands. The last time we saw them was on the ‘Life is Peachy’ tour, possibly also before some readers were out of nappies. So, it was with some excitement that we watched them stride onto the spacious Big Top stage to deafening applause and kick right into a career-spanning set that opened with an electric rendition of ‘Falling Away From Me’.
