Live Photos: Obituary @ Sydney’s Manning Bar – May 4, 2013

24 May

We had the pleasure of photographing Florida death metal legends Obituary when they played Sydney’s Manning Bar on May 4, 2013. We were asked to shoot by the folks at HEAVY Mag. While we didn’t review this particular gig, we can confirm the guys slayed the eager crowd. We’ve never heard a clearer, more aurally devastating mix at the Manning Bar and the guitar tone Trevor Peres was getting from his Fender Strat was insane. Who’d have ever considered playing death metal on a Strat!?

Support bands were Sanctium and Daemon Foetal Harvest.

We had the pleasure of photographing and reviewing Slayer‘s concert at Sydney’s Big Top at Luna Park on Monday February 25, 2013. It was their ‘Sidewave’ show, supporting the annual Soundwave festival and the band was joined by Anthrax and Kingdom of Sorrow. We shot and reviewed the gig for lifemusicmedia.com. Click HERE to check out the gallery, or read the below:

Ahh, the annual Soundwave cavalcade. A time for sunburn, aching legs, aching livers and severe tinnitus. For those with average bank accounts, Soundwave is usually a choice between the main festival and the many and varied accompanying ‘Sidewave’ shows.

For some, the choice to purchase tickets to a Sidewave is more about being able to see their favourite bands in a more intimate environment with a few thousand other die-hards instead of tens of thousands. We’re left in no doubt tonight that many of the punters filling Luna Park’s Bog Top in Sydney fall squarely into the third category: those who feel compelled to spend up and see their favourite band/s in both arenas. Tonight’s Sidewave, starring Slayer, Anthrax and Kingdom of Sorrow is truly an exceptional line up of talent for one intimate venue and it comes as no surprise to find a long line of black-clad dudes stretching out past the big open mouth of the amusement park.

Live Gallery: Sick of It All + Agnostic Front + Toe to Toe @ Manning Bar – 05.05.2012

13 Jun

Issue 10 of Australian Hysteria magazine is on-sale now, featuring our live photos from the recent Sick of It All show at the Manning Bar at Sydney University on May 5, 2012. Supports included Australia’s punk veterans Toe to Toe and New York’s Agnostic Front.

The last time Hosking Industries had seen Agnostic Front was when Ben worked at the long-defunct Music Factory in Newcastle, NSW Australia back in the mid-late 1990s. The rehearsal studio boasted a cool live venue downstairs called The Pitt (that was the spelling) that played host to hardcore and punk bands from all over the world. Agnostic Front played two shows that day, with an all-ages in the morning for the kids and an over-18s later that night. Ben was charged with making sure the band were comfortable during their stay.

All three bands put on excellent performances this time around at the Manning Bar, although Agnostic Front singer Roger Miret was feeling the rage for other reasons: a series of technical issues causing plenty of angst and no doubt creating some tension back stage after their set.

Despite the humourous and numerous comical excursions and larger-than-life persona of Agnostic axe-slinger ‘Stigma’, Sick of It All were still the highlight of the night with brothers Lou and Pete Koller putting on live wire performances. In fact, it’s always surprising Pete doesn’t collapse with cardiac arrest, considering the non-stop performance he puts on. Anyway, enjoy our gallery of 30 pics from the show! Live Photos: Mastodon + Gojira + Kvelertak @ Sydney’s Hi-FI Bar – March 1, 2012

04 May

A series of 40 images from Mastodon‘s gig at Sydney’s Hi-Fi bar at Moore Park on march 1, 2012 – shot for Australian Hysteria magazine. The concert was one of the many Sidewave shows happening as part of the huge Soundwave festival tour that rolled through town at the end of February 2012.

The band were supported by Gojira and Kvelertak. Hosking Industries was lucky enough to shoot some promo shots of Gojira before the gig. You can see the results HERE.

The venue was newly opened and the stage lighting was horribly dark through each of the three band’s sets, which was a shame. There were more shooters in the pit than I’ve ever seen and all were complaining about the darkness. CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to view and download.

Live Photos: Angels & Airwaves + Madina Lake + Framing Hanley @ UNSW Roundhouse

11 Apr

Issue 9 of Australian Hysteria magazine has just gone on sale here in Australia, including our live review and photos from the recent Angels & Airwaves gig at the UNSW Roundhouse in Sydney on Monday February 27, 2012. This was one of the many ‘Sidewaves’ that took place around Sydney in the wake of the Soundwave Festival and the band were supported by America’s Madina Lake and Framing Hanley.

Review excerpt:
“As lovely as songs like ‘Saturday Love’, Everything’s Magic’ and ‘Call to Arms’ are, there’s just no escaping the fact that they’d be a far greater force with a real singer at the mic’.”

“Closing a 14 song strong set with the epic ‘The War’, Angels & Airwaves left the stage and the sweaty, wasted crowd in the their wake with high fives all round for a job well done. It’s nice to know there’s life beyond Blink 182 and penis jokes. Maybe.”

Live Gallery: The Casualties @ Manning Bar, Sydney (02.12.11)

12 Feb

Australian Hysteria magazine has just gone on sale with one of our photos of USA’s The Casualties. Sadly is was incorrectly attributed to someone else, but we know it was ours. To celebrate, here’s a selection of 23 images from the gig, supported by The Scam and Topnovil. Pretty sure The Scam were off chops for their set!

We didn’t review the gig, but we can attest to quality performances by both Topnovil and The Casualties. Apparently The Casualties had tried two or three times before to get into the country, but had visa issues due to the singer’s Colombian background. I think the less-than-capacity crowd could attest to the band’s eagerness to make up for the trouble.

Feature Car: Ziggy’s Hot Rods 1968 Ford Mustang

03 Feb

Hosking Industries had the rare pleasure of photographing the 1968 Mustang Fastback known as Warhorse 427 for Modified Mustangs & Fords magazine in the USA last year. This incredible custom vehicle was the recipient of 5000 man-hours in the bodywork alone! Built by the talented team at Ziggy’s Hot Rods in Medowie, about two hours north of Sydney, Australia, the off-white Fastback has wowed audiences since its debut at MotorEx around 18 months ago.

The car, owned by Mike Kluver, is featured in the March 2012 issue of Modified Mustangs & Fords, with the feature story also written by us. You can visit their website HERE.

We shot the car close to the Ziggy’s workshop one steamy Summer evening. Toward the end of the shoot it became so humid that the UV filter on the front of our lens started to fog up! We rattled off more images than we’ve probably ever snapped for any other car, such is the detail inherent in the Mustang and today we bring you six FREE desktop wallpaper-sized images for your own enjoyment.

Strobist fans will find lighting information on each image’s caption on our Flickr page. CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to view and download the shots.

Live Review: Mike Patton’s Mondo Cane @ State Theatre, Sydney – 17.01.12

Mike Patton's Mondo Cane - Live Review

theAUreview.com just published our review of Mike Patton’s Mondo Cane at Sydney’s State Theatre on January 17, 2012 – supported by Melbourne’s Anthony Patreas. Check out the full review by CLICKING HERE or on the image.

…Mike Patton needs no introduction. His history with bands like Faith No More and Mr Bungle has virtually made him a household name. His other projects such as Fantomas, Tomahawk and Peeping Tom have further secured his reputation as an uncompromising, twisted and true pioneering genius…

1990s Revival: Avail – Over the James (c1998)

03 Oct

For all who saw Richmond, Virginia’s Avail play with Lagwagon earlier this year, you’ll know they can rock the house down. And now, here is their new album: much heavier than their last effort but still in keeping with the great vocal harmonies and melodies that filled the last disc.

14 phenomenal tracks are what’s on offer here and it has become obvious that the metal head drummer has had his evil way with the rest of the band, as their style has just gone through the roof as far as heaviness is concerned. But don’t get me wrong, this is a very good thing. No-one will be disappointed with this CD at all; there is just nothing bad to comment on and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer bunch of guys.

From the song names, lyrics and the interview I did with the guys before, the issues put forward are all local to them and you can tell this by the amount of emotion put into each performance. It just shows really well that if you write about something that directly affects you, it will sound that much more natural and powerful. It worked for these guys tenfold.

I’m sure any one of the 380 people at the Pitt on January 9 will either have already bought Over the James or are going to buy it, aren’t you!? No really, this album is the perfect example of how to write and record the perfect CD. Congratulations guys.

Live Review and Gallery: Suicide Silence @ Bald Faced Stag, Sydney (10.09.11)

14 Sep

Our review and photo gallery from the recent Suicide Silence show at the Bald Faced Stag Hotel in Sydney, Australia has just been posted online at theAUreview.com. Click HERE or the image below to check it out in full.

We’ll be posting higher-resolution versions of the images onto our Flickr page as per normal after a few days, so stay tuned for the link!

Mitch Lucker, Mark Heylum, Chris Garza and the rest of the Californian deathcore band really put on a great show considering the switch to a smaller, sweatier and generally crappier venue. Despite that, we got some really good shots and we’d love to hear your thoughts on them, and the review.
