Testing, testing: Camera Rig Test on Holden VZ Calais

18 Jun

We thought we’d do one more test shoot with our new Rig Pro car camera rig before offering it for commercial and paid private shoots. Not much to say here, other than giving a happy shout out to car owner Lawrence for donating his time and his sweet LSX-powered VZ Calais for the afternoon. Cheers!

Opinion Piece: No Regrets, Ever (Street Commodores Editorial Columns)

17 Jun

This is the fourth in a regular series of editorial pieces we’ll be posting here on the blog, originally written by Hosking Industries’ Ben Hosking for Street Commodores magazine and other magazines he’s completed opinion pieces for. This column appeared in issue 170 of Street Commodores:

No Regrets, Ever. (Written 16.03.2010)

Life’s a journey that doesn’t end until you die. So don’t waste time regretting the past.

When you’re young, it’s easy to get caught up stressing about the myriad mistakes that you make along the way to becoming an adult. You waste time worrying about stupid things like wearing the right clothes or having the right hair and generally fitting in to the right crowd. It’s all wasted energy that you could be expending on your journey forward.

There are a number of choice quotes that I could insert here, but my favourites are ‘you don’t stop learning until you stop breathing’, ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’ and ‘regret nothing’.

Just let those three sink in for a little bit…

Feature Car: John Trunzo’s FJ Holden Coupe

14 Jun

We recently had the pleasure of photographing this iconic Australian kustom for Cruzin magazine. Rebuilt over four years by John Trunzo, the FJ Holden was originally built by Lance Simmers in the 1960 and won scores of trophies both in car shows and on the drag strip. Today, the car is far beyond what Simmers had done with the car, with flawless burnt orange candy paint covering top and bottom, however the essence of the original car remains.

As always, we bring you six FREE desktop wallpaper version of the images over on our Flickr page. CLICK HERE or on the thumbs below to go get ‘em! Lighting fans can also see our lighting information and EXIF data, although the main exterior shots were all natural light in this instance.

Opinion Piece: New Beginnings (Street Commodores Editorial Columns)

13 Jun

This is the first in a regular series of editorial pieces we’ll be posting here on the blog, originally written by Hosking Industries’ Ben Hosking for Street Commodores magazine and other magazines he’s completed opinion pieces for. This column appeared in issue 169 of Street Commodores:

New Beginnings

As Street Commodores enters a new era with a new Editor, I’m in the enviable position of watching it all unfold, up close and personal.

The internal machinations of a magazine are something that seems to remain a perennial mystery to most folks on the outside, no matter how much we’ve chosen to divulge over the years. Street Commodores has always been one of the most accessible in terms of how much contact the editorial staff have with its readers and fans. Yet still, there’s only so much you want to give away and plenty that no one would probably ever care to know. Certainly, knowing too much can work to ruin the fantasy or aura that can surround the things you love.

Sneak Peek: Fane Harman’s Turbo V6 Nissan Convertible

12 Jun

Just a sneaky peek at a shoot we did recently for a local performance car magazine. The Nissan convertible belongs to northern beaches guy Fane Harman who runs a busy tow service called The Freestyler – hence the stickers down the side. He towed our very own Project XXX back from Victoria safely and for a great price. Stay tuned for more once it’s printed!

Opinion: Goodbye and Hello (Street Commodores Editorial Columns)

03 Jun

This is the first in a regular series of editorial pieces we’ll be posting here on the blog, originally written by Hosking Industries’ Ben Hosking for Street Commodores magazine and other magazines he’s completed opinion pieces for. The following piece was the first column he wrote after leaving Street Commodores magazine to go freelance at the start of 2010. This is an exercise in looking back on the last three years as much as providing an online record of the pieces Ben’s written since forming Hosking Industries:

Goodbye and Hello (Written Jan 27, 2010)

You may have heard that I left the building. Don’t worry, I haven’t gone too far.

I have to admit, I really was hoping that I’d make it to that mystical 100 issues as Editor of Street Commodores, but alas, it’s not to be the case. My time came, I packed my things and I left the Express building to face new challenges and enter the next phase of my professional and personal life.

Model Shoot: Jessica Pridham for The Chop Shop

21 May

The guys at The Chop Shop in Gosford on NSW’s Central Coast called on us to shoot some promotional images for their 2013 MotorEx campaign. You may recall we photographed their promo stuff for the 2012 event (SEE IT HERE). Naturally, we jumped at the chance to work with the Chop Shop guys again, if for no other reason than to see all their awesome automotive projects up close.

Melbourne’s Jessica Pridham flew up for the shoot this time around. It was also great to try some different lighting options and setups using the same location. Interested photographers can read about our lighting setups and EXIF data on the images at our Flickr page. Everyone can enjoy wallpaper-sized versions there, too. Behind the Scenes: Inside Australia’s Coolest Garages

Performance Garage Photo Shoots

Performance Garage Photo Shoots     Performance Garage Photo Shoots

Performance Garage magazine launched in early 2012 through Express Publications and Hosking Industries was there. In the ensuing 18 months or so we’ve shot a number of incredible sheds, garages and workshops for the magazine, capturing the places and the people who use them. We thought it was high time we uploaded some select samples for all of you playing at home.

All the images are of cars and places within NSW Australia, primarily Newcastle and Sydney. Workshops like Ziggy’s Hot Rods and Lowe Fabrications are joined by private man caves and garages owned by guys including the talented Dave Hart, John Stevens, Murray Forman and Brian Apap. Be sure to check this image set again in the future when we add more samples from published shoots.
