Feature Car: Davin Cochrane’s LS1-Powered LH Holden Torana

06 Feb

Two red Toranas in one issue? Yep, Xtreme Holdens issue 51 contains two red LH/LX Toranas, but they are different animals. Les Chadwick’s 355ci-powered hatch is a total classic Australian street machine, whereas Davin Cochrane’s four-door, pictured here, has gone an altogether different route.

Powered by an LS1 alloy V8 and T56 and wearing a set of Simmons FR rims, Davin’s LH is the epitome of retrotech flavour. You can read all about the radical modern transformation that took place in issue 51, over a generous nine page feature.

As always, we’ve got a series of FREE desktop wallpaper images for you to enjoy and strobist fans will find our lighting information and EXIF data on each image’s caption, too. Simply CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to visit our Flickr page where all the goodies lay in wait for your visit.

Feature Car: Craig Lockhart’s 1964 EH Holden “Crewman”

09 Nov

Now for something a little different! Craig Lockhart owns what is probably the ONLY vehicle of its kind in the world in the form of this 1964 EH Holden ute. It boasts a stretched and massaged phantom body style, resembling the much more modern Crewman that Holden released with the advent of the VY model some years ago. You can read all about it and see some build shots in issue 50 of Brute Utes magazine, which is due to go on sale any day now.

It’s powered by a VT 304ci injected 5L V8 engine and features custom interior trim as well as immense detail no matter where you look; including under the car where everything has been painted and smoothed to a high sheen. Even the stainless exhaust system has been polished. Be sure to check it out when the magazine goes on sale.

As always, you’ll find our photos on Flickr complete with EXIF data and lighting information, however only the detail shots used any artificial lighting. The exterior shots were all shot using nothing but Mother Nature’s wonderful lighting from above. Sorry to all the strobist fans out there. Feature Car: Col’s HR Holden Ute

02 Nov

We had the pleasure of shooting Col’s incredible HR Holden utility early in 2011. It hasn’t seen the light of day in print yet, but we wanted to show you just how nice this old ute is. You can regularly see Col and the HR on show at car shows all over the greater Sydney area, including All Holden Day each year.

Powered by a nicely dressed small-block Chevrolet V8, the ute features a sweet red leather trim, large diameter billet rims and die-straight bodywork. Just to make things even better, Col says he’s now turning this same level of attention to another old Holden. Can’t wait to see that!

As always, you’ll find our photos on Flickr complete with EXIF data and lighting information, however only the detail shots used any artificial lighting. The exterior shots were all shot using nothing but Mother Nature’s wonderful lighting from above in the early morning. Sorry to all the strobist fans out there.

Feature Car: Simon Grima’s Phantom FE Holden Ute

30 Apr

Simon Grima's FE Holden

A small selection of images from a shoot completed in 2010 on Simon Grima’s incredible phantom FE Holden ute. Originally a sedan (hence the ‘Phantom’), Simon put in a lot of man hours shaping and changing the metalwork to take the form of a utility – without any trade qualifications, just learning as he went along.

It’s powered by an injected Holden 5L and runs almost entirely Commodore running gear, with plenty of other Holden bits and piece throughout the build sourced from his large stockpile of parts collected over the years. The full shoot is coming out in issue 39 of Custom Utes magazine, published by Express Media Group. Both words and images by Hosking Industries.

Strobist: All images (except the driving shot) use two 430EXII Speedlites and a 580EXII. All mounted on their little ground-level stands, bare and on full power; triggered with Cactus V4s. Two light the side of the car and the 580EXII lights the nose or tail (whichever is in shot). Not a lot of post processing beyond saturation etc.

You can click on the thumbnails to view them in 1280×1024 resolution and feel free to use them as your desktop wallpaper! CLICK HERE to view the gallery on Flickr.
