Opinion Piece: Car Shopping (Street Commodores Editorial Column)

24 Nov

This is the 20th in a regular series of editorial pieces we’ll be posting here on the blog, originally written by Hosking Industries’ Ben Hosking for Street Commodores magazine and other magazines he’s completed opinion pieces for. This column appeared in issue 187 of Street Commodores:

Car Shopping (Written June 1, 2011)

With Project RAT304 gone, the journey to find a new daily began in earnest.

No one could claim that I tried very hard to sell the nasty old VH wagon, known lovingly as the ‘Rat. Besides a mention on the Street Commodores forum ‘for sale’ section and a couple of for sale signs in the back windows, the only other promotion my desire to sell got was mentioning it to people in passing.

When I left the warm safety and regular paycheck of SC HQ last January I had to make a choice between Project XXX and the wagon. It was just going to be impossible to afford both projects and naturally, the VP won the argument hands down. This relegated the wagon to daily driver duties – a task it performed admirably for a few years.

Opinion Piece: Play Nice (Street Commodores Editorial Column)

This is the 18th in a regular series of editorial pieces we’ll be posting here on the blog, originally written by Hosking Industries’ Ben Hosking for Street Commodores magazine and other magazines he’s completed opinion pieces for. This column appeared in issue 184 of Street Commodores:

Play Nice (Written March 21, 2011)

I’m not religious, but do agree with the mantra of ‘treat others as you want to be treated’.

The recent catastrophes in New Zealand, Queensland, Victoria and Japan have really helped put things into perspective for a lot of people. Australians, for the most part, really haven’t had anything in the way of terrible hardship for at least two generations.

There has been no crippling depression, no civil unrest, no famine and no widespread disease and whilst our version of democracy is really a joke, it’s a far sight better than the dictatorships many other nations live under. Just look at the lethal struggle nations like Egypt and Lybia have undertaken to try and free themselves of oppression.

Opinion Piece: Don’t Be a Tool (Street Commodores Editorial Columns)

Don’t Be a Tool (Written February 1, 2011)

How do you expect to receive fair treatment when you play the fool?

I was driving out to Katoomba recently for the second annual Lady Luck Festival. Situated a kilometre up in the air atop the Blue Mountains in NSW, it was a wonderful place to cruise to on a warm Saturday morning. However the first part of my trip was both disappointingly annoying and confounding all at once.

Not more than five kays from my front door I noticed a VR or VS sedan up ahead with clear tail lights and stockies on the back. Right away I knew the guy would be up to no good – that combination always spells disaster. Sure enough, at the next set of lights he stood on the throttle and lit up his driver’s side rear cheese cutter.

Opinion Piece: Getting in the front Door (Street Commodores Magazine Editorials)

This is the fifth in a regular series of editorial pieces we’ll be posting here on the blog, originally written by Hosking Industries’ Ben Hosking for Street Commodores magazine and other magazines he’s completed opinion pieces for. This column appeared in issue 171 of Street Commodores:

Getting in the Front Door (April 14, 2010)

One of the most common questions I get asked is about how I came to work in this line of business.

On this, the 100th issue of Street Commodores to include my name in some way, I thought I’d touch upon a subject that has often popped up in conversation during my time with the magazine: getting into automotive journalism.

It doesn’t seem to matter how many industry colleagues I talk to. I get a different answer each and every time I pose the question myself. I don’t think I’ve met someone working on performance magazines that have found themselves in the business via the same journey.

Opinion Piece: Back in the Saddle (Street Commodores Editorial Columns)

This is the first in a regular series of editorial pieces we’ll be posting here on the blog, originally written by Hosking Industries’ Ben Hosking for Street Commodores magazine and other magazines he’s completed opinion pieces for. This column appeared in issue 168 of Street Commodores:

Back in the Saddle (Written Feb 3, 2010)

It’s been a fun month, getting back to the kind of work that made me love the magazine business in the first place.

It has been an interesting month for me since I left the cozy confines of my 3x3m office at Street Commodores HQ. I’ve been flat out setting up my own company and learning the ropes of all the kinds of tax nonsense that one needs to know about when they’re running things for themselves. I’ve also been spending a huge amount of time developing story ideas, designing company stationary and generally being creative – something I’ve only really been able to do a few times a year when the next Cruise for Charity sticker needed designing or the rare occasion a website had to be built.
