Live Review: Nickelback @ Allphones Arena, Sydney (24.11.12)

04 Dec

Our review of Nickelback’s Sydney concert was originally published at theaureview.com.au.

Nickelback Sydney 2012

Despite the constant barrage of name-calling and derision that this Canadian monster rock band seems to receive from all corners of the globe, this reviewer has always felt that Chad Kroeger and co’s ability to write larger-than-life, catchy hooks can simply not be denied. Additionally, for all the slings and arrows fired in their direction accusing them of being sell-outs, plastic, fake and everything else, you surely have to admit that their catalogue contains some truly fist-pumping moments.

Apparently some 20,000 people agreed with us on November 24 when Nickelback filled the Allphones Arena for the first of two nights. The band’s broad appeal was certainly obvious when you looked at the seemingly disparate throng making their way into the over-sized shed at Sydney’s Olympic Park through several layers of security, bag checks and ushers.

Live Gallery: Sick of It All + Agnostic Front + Toe to Toe @ Manning Bar – 05.05.2012

13 Jun

Issue 10 of Australian Hysteria magazine is on-sale now, featuring our live photos from the recent Sick of It All show at the Manning Bar at Sydney University on May 5, 2012. Supports included Australia’s punk veterans Toe to Toe and New York’s Agnostic Front.

The last time Hosking Industries had seen Agnostic Front was when Ben worked at the long-defunct Music Factory in Newcastle, NSW Australia back in the mid-late 1990s. The rehearsal studio boasted a cool live venue downstairs called The Pitt (that was the spelling) that played host to hardcore and punk bands from all over the world. Agnostic Front played two shows that day, with an all-ages in the morning for the kids and an over-18s later that night. Ben was charged with making sure the band were comfortable during their stay.

All three bands put on excellent performances this time around at the Manning Bar, although Agnostic Front singer Roger Miret was feeling the rage for other reasons: a series of technical issues causing plenty of angst and no doubt creating some tension back stage after their set.

Despite the humourous and numerous comical excursions and larger-than-life persona of Agnostic axe-slinger ‘Stigma’, Sick of It All were still the highlight of the night with brothers Lou and Pete Koller putting on live wire performances. In fact, it’s always surprising Pete doesn’t collapse with cardiac arrest, considering the non-stop performance he puts on. Anyway, enjoy our gallery of 30 pics from the show! Live Gallery: Lostprophets + Kids in Glass Houses + Versaemerge @ Metro Theatre

24 Apr

The annual Soundwave Festival brought a ton of great international bands to Sydney through February and March of 2012 and if the festival itself wasn’t enough to get you smiling, there was also a full week’s worth of official ‘Sidewave’ gigs where the various bands would team up and put on additional shows in smaller venues. One such Sidewave was headlined by Lostprophets at Sydney’s Metro Theatre on February 28, 2012.

We shot this gig for Australian Hysteria magazine and the band were supported by Kids in Glass Houses from Wales and American band Versaemerge. We weren’t asked to review this gig, suffice it to say that all three bands put on a great show with plenty of energetic performances by each and having watched the previous night’s show with Angels & Airwaves at the UNSW Roundhouse, it was nice to see three bands with singers who could sing.

Anyway, check out 32 images from the gig by CLICKING HERE or on the thumbnails below and enjoy!

Live Photos: Seether + Numbers Radio – Metro Theatre, Sydney (05.02.12)

07 Feb

TheAUreview has just published our live concert photos and short review on the Seether gig that took place at the Metro Theatre on Sunday Feb 5, 2012 here in Sydney. Seether was supported by Brisbane’s Numbers Radio and the bands played to an almost full house. Check out our photos by CLICKING HERE or on the image below. Here’s an snippet from the review:

…Running perfectly on time, Seether took to the stage in classic form, with the tattered Metro curtains slowly rolling back to reveal the three piece shrouded in darkness. Sadly this dim lighting prevailed for much of the show, with only momentary bursts of light illuminating the band here and there throughout their set…

Photo Gallery: Exodus @ Manning Bar – October 2, 2010

04 Oct

I attended the Exodus gig at the Manning Bar on the campus of the university of Sydney on Saturday October 3, 2010 – shooting it for Lifemusicmedia.com. Exodus is one of the seminal ‘Bay Area’ thrash bands from the USA that were around since the birth of thrash. Kirk Hammett from Metallica was actually in Exodus before he joined Metallica in the early 1980s.

Supporting acts on the night were Subtract from New Zealand and Switchblade from Australia. Switchblade played a form of technical death metal with a rather clean cut image. All the band members were wearing matching black work shirts with their logo on the sleeve. Kinda reminded me of early Staind, when they all were black Dickies or Ben Sherman shirts.

I will probably also be reviewing the gig, but for now enjoy the photos!

Live Review: Train @ Enmore Theatre – Monday June 21, 2010

25 Jun

Lifemusicmedia.com have just uploaded my live review of the Train gig at the Enmore Theatre in Newtown (Sydney, Australia) on Monday night, June 12, 2010. Read the excerpt below and hit the links to read the full review and view the image galleries:

…Train are entertaining. Monahan refused to stand still; stalking the stage from one end to the other while smiling at the audience and taking photos of himself with fan’s cameras from the stage’s edge. Stafford swapped guitars between each song, cutting an imposing figure in his military-styled jacket and polished skull. They’re happy to get as close to their fans as they can, foregoing a crowd barrier as flailing arms and hungry hands grasp desirously from the dance floor below…

Live Review: Cassette Kids @ Oxford Art Factory

23 Jun

Lifemusicmedia.com have just published my review of the Cassette Kids gig at the Oxford Art Factory in Darlinghurst last Friday night, June 18, 2010. See the excerpt below and CLICK HERE or click the image below to read the full review:

…It was refreshing to see a pop-infused group like Cassette Kids displaying such an enthusiastic, energetic and believable stage presence. All four band members played with an obvious passion, no doubt fuelled by their crowd’s enthusiasm for what they were seeing and hearing – a reciprocating and perfect symbiosis…

Live Music Photography: Train @ Enmore Theatre

22 Jun

I went and saw American pop/rock group Train at the Enmore Theatre (Sydney) last night for lifemusicmedia.com. Again, not my kind of music, but they were consumate professionals who delivered a very slick performance to a relatively full house. The audience was made up of a lot of women, of all ages and apparent backgrounds. I suppose that’s because of their chart-friendly vibe – but don’t they realise they’re all old men?

I’ll be scribbling up a review of the show for LMM soon, but suffice it to say that the show seemed to mainly revolve around the singer and the bald guitarist, with the other musicians hiding in the shadows behind. It often reeked of cabaret, with a lot of banter to the audience, interaction and even a moment when the singer brought six young women onto the stage to sing along to one of their hits.

I’ve uploaded a selection of images that I took on the night to my flickr page. CLICK HERE to see more. A selection of images exclusive to lifemusicmedia.com will be online shortly.

Live Review: Dillinger Escape Plan @ Metro – Fri May 21

27 May

Lifemusicmedia.com have just published my live review of the excellent Dillinger Escape Plan gig at the Metro Theatre in Sydney on Friday May 21, 2010.

From the very first bars, the band are a frenetic live experience. Singer Greg Puciato throws himself into the mosh during the first song; followed closely by guitarist Jeff Tuttle during the second. Dillinger Escape Plan’s live performance is just as chaotic and schizophrenic as their recorded efforts and it’s a joy to behold.

Live Review: Behemoth/Job for a Cowboy at The Metro Sydney

22 Apr

Lifemusicmedia.com just uploaded my review of the Behemoth and Job for a Cowboy gig at the Metro Theatre in Sydney on Friday April 16.

Singer/guitarist/ring leader, Nergal somehow manages to be Mr. Charisma and a soulless purveyor of all things evil at the same time. He’s a man possessed, working the crowd like a Pied Piper and creating a mosh that lasts the duration of the set. It’s truly a sight to behold and the sound mix is a devastating 100%.

Behemoth is evidence of Europe’s dark history and their ability to feed on it and create such intense music is awe inspiring. The band is muscular, regimented and disciplined. You can see it in every movement, every facial expression (or lack of)… it’s almost military precision taking musical form. It’s glorious theatre as only the Europeans seem able to pull off convincingly.
