Live Review: Periphery & TesseracT @ Annandale Hotel – 30.07.11

12 Aug

With the Annandale Hotel sold out ahead of the big night, there was more than a little anticipation for this most ‘djenty’ of gigs. Headlined by two of the current forerunners of this new style people are calling ‘djent’, USA’s Periphery and the UK’s TesseracT (no, that’s not a typo) are both hot ticket items amongst the technical/progressive metal crowds. You can tell just by looking at the crowd streaming in through the doors that there’s something different going on.

For the uninitiated, djent (you pronounce it like you would the word gent, as in gentleman) combines the chugging down tuned riffage and technicality of Sweden’s Meshuggah with other elements like atmospheric interludes, clean vocals and other ingredients to create something entirely new. A slew of great new bands have popped up around the genre/scene since its inception and tonight’s show will showcase two of the best.

Sydney’s own As Silence Breaks opens up proceedings tonight, although sadly (or happily, depending on how you look at it) their style is a little more straight forward modern metal than the two bands following them. They play an admirable set of tunes to a decent response, although they’re not as tight as some of their riffs demand. Strong performances by both the singer and bassist prove an enjoyable watch.

Feature Car: Phil Retford’s 1934 Ford 3-Window Coupe

01 Aug

A selection of five images taken during our photo shoot on Phil Retford’s Big-Block 1934 Ford Coupe for Heavy Duty Hotrods magazine in Australia. The shoot will be in issue 9 of the magazine, due out very soon.

Phil’s fenderless 3-window coupe runs a big-block Chev’ and is mighty fast on the quarter mile where it runs in the low 11sec bracket. The alloy-headed BBC also runs nitrous, with the tank and a fuel cell living in the small boot space.

Feature Car: Chris Milburn’s LJ Holden Torana Sedan

25 Jul

A selection of six images from a photo shoot and feature story Hosking Industries did on Chris Milburn’s sweet LJ Holden Torana sedan for Xtreme Holdens magazine in Australia. The feature appears in the latest issue of the magazine, number 38, on sale now.

As you can see from the images, Chris’ LJ runs a nice Holden six cylinder engine with triples and sounds angry thanks to an aggressive cam profile. The entire car has been rebuilt from the ground up and you can read all about it in Xtreme Holdens.

You can download desktop wallpapers of each of the images we’ve uploaded by CLICKING HERE or on each of the images below. Strobist information is available on each image’s caption for anyone interested.

Feature Car: Ray Tyler’s LJ Torana Coupe

16 Jul

A selection of five images from a photo shoot we did on Ray Tyler’s 1972 Holden LJ Torana coupe that has been built as a circuit racer. It appeared in issue 5 of Holden Horsepower magazine in July 2011.

Powered by a hot six-cylinder Holden engine, the car boasts a full roll cage, race seats and plenty of camber. The car had not been raced or dyno tested at the time of publication, but the AVGAS-fed beast was due to hit the track soon. I remember it being quite an angry, cammy and temperamental machine on the day of the shoot.

All shots were lit with Canon Speedlite flashes and there is strobist information on the individual shots for anyone interested.

A Look Inside: My Office

10 Jul

Ben Hosking's Office Ben Hosking's Office

I was messing around with my flash last night, taking some photos around the house after spending the day painting a couple of rooms. I shot this image of my home office with my Canon 7D and 10-22mm super wide-angle lens. There’s about five different shots in here to get the lighting how I wanted it; all melded together in Photoshop.

The guitars pictured are Ibanez RGA121 Prestige, Ibanez MMM1, Ibanez TC420 Talman and ESP LTD V500. The amplifier is a highly modded Crate Vintage Club VC50212 tube model.

This is where I spend most of my day writing, designing or working pics. The desk faces a large window that unfortunately faces a high Colorbond fence. We’ve plented a bunch of Murraya hedge plants outside the window that should grow to cover the fence and look much nicer.
