Hosking Industries got to witness the sonic gumbo that is Between the Buried and Me at Sydney’s Metro Theatre on Saturday November 16, 2013. Not existing fans of the band, it was a surprising and impressive show of dexterity and songwriting. Indeed, all three bands (including Melbourne’s Ne Obliviscaris and Indiana’s The Contortionist) were unique, complex and entertaining in their own unique ways. Please take the time to read our full report below which was originally published via lifemusicmedia.com:

Tonight’s line up at Sydney’s Metro Theatre was nothing if not unique. Each of the three bands possess highly distinct sonic aesthetics that set them apart not only from one another, but the rest of the current metal scene. It promised to be an interesting night of heavy metal and we’re sure no one left disappointed.

Melbourne’s Ne Obliviscaris brought their own enthusiastic crowd to open the night’s festivities. Not only did the six-piece (including a singing violinist in the form of Tim Charles) receive plenty of applause when they announced they were working on their second album, but the band wasted no time whipping the early crowd into a healthy mosh. Indeed, when Tim put down his violin and launched into the crowd for a mid-set crowd surf, the punters were only too eager to oblige. No doubt their mix of extreme progressive metal (complete with some black metal overtones and lush, extended instrumental sections) won them a number of new fans tonight as well.

We had the pleasure of finally seeing Melbourne modern metal band Circles perform in Sydney on November 9, 2013 at the Bald Faced Stag Hotel – supported by Dawn Heist, Red Bee and Beggar’s Orchestra. Below is our review of the gig and our image gallery or 35 photos, originally published on Lifemusicmedia.com.

Contemporary Australian metal was on show in a big way tonight at Sydney’s Bald Faced Stag Hotel in Leichardt. The small room has played host to a surprising number of high-profile acts over the last couple of years, including some of the last shows by Suicide Silence before Mitch Lucker’s untimely passing and a recent show by UK noise merchants Rolo Tomasi. Tonight, Melbourne djent exponents Circles hit the joint, promoting their debut full-length album, ‘Infinitas’.

Three other Aussie acts helped get the night’s proceedings underway, starting with local act Beggar’s Orchestra. The band kicks off to a pretty empty room, but thoroughly entertains the assembled group that clearly includes a large contingent of enthusiastic friends and fans with their unique mix of dynamic and dramatic songs. They’re good to watch, with some good stage presence and while the vocal harmonies get better as the set progresses, overall they’re a great addition to tonight’s line up.

Live Photos: Obituary @ Sydney’s Manning Bar – May 4, 2013

24 May

We had the pleasure of photographing Florida death metal legends Obituary when they played Sydney’s Manning Bar on May 4, 2013. We were asked to shoot by the folks at HEAVY Mag. While we didn’t review this particular gig, we can confirm the guys slayed the eager crowd. We’ve never heard a clearer, more aurally devastating mix at the Manning Bar and the guitar tone Trevor Peres was getting from his Fender Strat was insane. Who’d have ever considered playing death metal on a Strat!?

Support bands were Sanctium and Daemon Foetal Harvest.

Live: Mnemic @ Whiplash Festival IV, Sandringham Hotel, Sydney – October 20, 2012

29 Oct

Lifemusicmedia.com recently published our photos and review from the Whiplash Festival IV, held at the Sandringham Hotel in Sydney on October 20, 2012. We now bring you the images and words here for your viewing and reading pleasure. Headlined by Denmark’s Mnemic, it was largely an excellent showcase of Australian metal. Read the unedited review below and CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails for the full image gallery:

So let’s set the scene of the Sydney leg of the Whiplash Festival: It’s been a 35-degree day of hot winds and sweaty butt cracks, but there’s been nowhere quite as hot as the insides of the iconic Sandringham Hotel in Newtown. Sadly, the heat is not all related to the scorching Aussie metal found within. This old venue is a steaming hot, sweaty, stinking series of boxes with stages and you feel the oppression from the moment you walk through the front doors. If the venue has air-con, you wouldn’t know it.

The building is a scene of barely controlled chaos with music equipment stacked into almost every corner with no sign of security for any of it, besides the two security guards at the doors of the venue. As a result, we were unsurprised to hear that one band’s cymbals had gone walk-about before their set.

Don’t get this reviewer wrong. A pretty picture it isn’t, but there is the overwhelming positive aspect to the Whiplash Festival that remains: it’s an incredible showcase of Australian metal with bands traveling from every corner of this country to perform. That’s something that can’t be undervalued.

Live: Cannibal Corpse, Psycroptic, Disentomb, Entrails Eradicated @ Metro Theatre – October 6, 2012

22 Oct

Originally published at lifemusicmedia.com, here are our photos and live review from the recent Cannibal Corpse gig at the Metro Theatre in Sydney on October 6, 2012. The American death metal veterans were supported by Australian metal bands Psycroptic, Disentomb and Entrails Eradicated. In typical Metro fashion, the lighting was abysmal. Australian death metal fans generally aren’t quite as lucky when it comes to high-profile gigs like their brethren who enjoy less-heavy strains of metal. You could probably blame the state of the music industry for the lack of international death artists all the way over here to our little patch of dirt in the middle of nowhere.

Therefore it’s a testament to the talent, determination and endless road miles put in by death metal legends Cannibal Corpse that Aussie fans have had the luxury of seeing the band live on our shores no less than three times in the last 10 years. However, despite the surprising regularity with which we have been able to enjoy Cannibal Corpse’s punishing live show, tonight’s gig at Sydney’s iconic Metro Theatre is no less special for it. The fact that the band is being supported by three Australian death metal acts tonight just adds to the impact.

First up is Western Australia’s Entrails Eradicated whose brand of super fast, super technical death leaves a half-full venue worth of punters with heads spinning. As if having two guitarists wildly sweep picking their way through a set wasn’t enough, their bare-footed, 6-string-weilding sweep picking bass player is enough to make this reviewer want to put the bass away and go become an accountant.

Live Photos: Angels & Airwaves + Madina Lake + Framing Hanley @ UNSW Roundhouse

11 Apr

Issue 9 of Australian Hysteria magazine has just gone on sale here in Australia, including our live review and photos from the recent Angels & Airwaves gig at the UNSW Roundhouse in Sydney on Monday February 27, 2012. This was one of the many ‘Sidewaves’ that took place around Sydney in the wake of the Soundwave Festival and the band were supported by America’s Madina Lake and Framing Hanley.

Review excerpt:
“As lovely as songs like ‘Saturday Love’, Everything’s Magic’ and ‘Call to Arms’ are, there’s just no escaping the fact that they’d be a far greater force with a real singer at the mic’.”

“Closing a 14 song strong set with the epic ‘The War’, Angels & Airwaves left the stage and the sweaty, wasted crowd in the their wake with high fives all round for a job well done. It’s nice to know there’s life beyond Blink 182 and penis jokes. Maybe.”

Photo Gallery: Blind Guardian @ Metro Theatre, Sydney – 30.09.11

14 Oct

We had the pleasure of shooting Germany’s iconic power metal band Blind Guardian at the Metro Theatre in Sydney, Australia at the end of September. They were supported by Australia’s premier exponent of the style, Black Majesty who also got a rousing response from the full house.

Hosking Industries were shooting for theAUReview.com and we can now bring you the gallery direct, with the images also now hosted on our Flickr page in a slightly higher resolution. Sadly we arrived too late to catch opening act EYEFEAR, but you’ll find a good gallery of images from both Black Majesty and Blind Guardian by CLICKING HERE or on the thumbnails below.
