Feature Car: Davin Cochrane’s LS1-Powered LH Holden Torana

06 Feb

Two red Toranas in one issue? Yep, Xtreme Holdens issue 51 contains two red LH/LX Toranas, but they are different animals. Les Chadwick’s 355ci-powered hatch is a total classic Australian street machine, whereas Davin Cochrane’s four-door, pictured here, has gone an altogether different route.

Powered by an LS1 alloy V8 and T56 and wearing a set of Simmons FR rims, Davin’s LH is the epitome of retrotech flavour. You can read all about the radical modern transformation that took place in issue 51, over a generous nine page feature.

As always, we’ve got a series of FREE desktop wallpaper images for you to enjoy and strobist fans will find our lighting information and EXIF data on each image’s caption, too. Simply CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to visit our Flickr page where all the goodies lay in wait for your visit.

Feature Car: Craig Lockhart’s 1964 EH Holden “Crewman”

09 Nov

Now for something a little different! Craig Lockhart owns what is probably the ONLY vehicle of its kind in the world in the form of this 1964 EH Holden ute. It boasts a stretched and massaged phantom body style, resembling the much more modern Crewman that Holden released with the advent of the VY model some years ago. You can read all about it and see some build shots in issue 50 of Brute Utes magazine, which is due to go on sale any day now.

It’s powered by a VT 304ci injected 5L V8 engine and features custom interior trim as well as immense detail no matter where you look; including under the car where everything has been painted and smoothed to a high sheen. Even the stainless exhaust system has been polished. Be sure to check it out when the magazine goes on sale.

As always, you’ll find our photos on Flickr complete with EXIF data and lighting information, however only the detail shots used any artificial lighting. The exterior shots were all shot using nothing but Mother Nature’s wonderful lighting from above. Sorry to all the strobist fans out there. Feature Car: Michael Symonds’ Holden VU SS

09 Mar

Brute Utes magazine recently published our photo shoot and story on Michael Symonds’ 2001 Holden VU SS, known as IM25US (I’m too suss, for the number plate illiterate). You can read all about Michael and his ute in issue 46 of the magazine, on sale very soon.

The ute’s LS1 engine makes a healthy 415rwhp thanks to some fine tuning by Sam’s Performance in Padstow, NSW. It’s clearly when things get more graphic that Michael’s SS really shines, with plenty of evil air brushed murals along the flanks and under the bonnet. The all-blue interior has to be seen up close to truly appreciate.

As always, we’ve got a selection of desktop wallpaper images of the VU for you to view and download FREE. While most of the shoot was done using ambient light, you can find lighting information and EXIF data on each image’s caption on our Flickr page. Just CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to check it all out.

Feature Car: Leo Leonidas’ HDT VN Lexcen ‘RARE’

02 Nov

Upon first glance you’d be forgiven for thinking this was an HDT Aero based on the usual Holden VN Commodore. However, you’d be wrong. This is Leo Leonidas’ HDT Aero, based upon a Toyota Lexcen and running a V6 instead of the usual injected 5L V8.

Young Leo found this car sitting at a wrecking yard, dumped by the original and sole owner after doing around 300,000kms. As it turned out, the car was a totally legit specimen – one of only four ever built for a Toyota dealership in the 1990s. You can read all about the incredible story of the car and Leo’s almost single-handed restoration in issue 189 of Street Commodores, on sale this week.

This shoot was actually our first ever commissioned car photo shoot, performed in 2010. We’re pretty proud of how it came out, considering we’d only done one short test shoot with the flash gear a few days prior. We hope you like what you see and remember that you can download FREE desktop wallpaper versions of the six images from our Flickr page by CLICKING HERE or on the thumbs below.

Feature Car: Ray Tyler’s LJ Torana Coupe

16 Jul

A selection of five images from a photo shoot we did on Ray Tyler’s 1972 Holden LJ Torana coupe that has been built as a circuit racer. It appeared in issue 5 of Holden Horsepower magazine in July 2011.

Powered by a hot six-cylinder Holden engine, the car boasts a full roll cage, race seats and plenty of camber. The car had not been raced or dyno tested at the time of publication, but the AVGAS-fed beast was due to hit the track soon. I remember it being quite an angry, cammy and temperamental machine on the day of the shoot.

All shots were lit with Canon Speedlite flashes and there is strobist information on the individual shots for anyone interested.

Feature Car: Ian Hallett’s Holden Rodeo Minitruck

13 May

Here is a small selection of images taken from a shoot we did recently for BAGGED magazine in Australia. It’s coming out in issue 8, due any day now. The shots were taken in Newcastle, NSW Australia in a mozzie-infested industrial area. As soon as the sun went down we were attacked!

There’s very minimal artificial lighting in these shots. In fact, only one flash was used on the back end to fill in some light in a couple of the shots. The rest are all using ambient light in the late afternoon with some wonderful cloud formations. Most of the post processing is done in Lightroom, including any filtering in the sky

You can download FREE 1280res desktop wallpapers of these images by clicking on them. Enjoy and be sure to pick up the next issue of BAGGED to check out the full shoot. CLICK HERE to view the gallery.
