InFocus Australasia: Issue 2 Out Now!

14 May

InFocus Australasia Magazine

Issue 2 of Australia’s newest photography magazine – InFocus Australasia – has just hit Apple’s Newsstand. A native iPad publication, InFocus is totally FREE. GET IT HERE!

This month’s issue includes two new features, including a News and Events section and a Cover Story. This month’s cover story is all about the convergence of stills and video for the professional photographer.

Also inside issue 2 is an interview with the AIPP’s CEO Peter Meyers and an interview with Nadine Saacks, who won the Album of the Year awards in 2012 with her wonderful series of images from a trip to Cuba. There’s also plenty to learn in issue 2 with tutorials on shooting with refraction, learning the basics of exposure and a continuation on our look at the anatomy of a DSLR camera from issue 1. We also take a long look at Canon’s new game-changing 1DC, as well as other digital cameras that can take 4K video footage.

Behind the Scenes: Inside Australia’s Coolest Garages

Performance Garage Photo Shoots

Performance Garage Photo Shoots     Performance Garage Photo Shoots

Performance Garage magazine launched in early 2012 through Express Publications and Hosking Industries was there. In the ensuing 18 months or so we’ve shot a number of incredible sheds, garages and workshops for the magazine, capturing the places and the people who use them. We thought it was high time we uploaded some select samples for all of you playing at home.

All the images are of cars and places within NSW Australia, primarily Newcastle and Sydney. Workshops like Ziggy’s Hot Rods and Lowe Fabrications are joined by private man caves and garages owned by guys including the talented Dave Hart, John Stevens, Murray Forman and Brian Apap. Be sure to check this image set again in the future when we add more samples from published shoots.

Feature Bike: Nathan Moses’ 1950 Harley Davidson

27 Feb

Our photo shoot and feature story on Nathan Moses’ cool retro 1950 Harley Davidson appeared in issue 20 of Wild Aussie Choppers (aka Ultimate Choppers). Nathan bought the bike from the USA and shipped it over for less than he could have built it for here. He tells us that, luckily, the bike came as good as, or better than advertised. Nice one!

Boasting a ’49 Springer front end, 84ci stroker twin and enough retro style to win anyone over, the bike enjoys an eight-page spread in the magazine. Be sure to check it out, on-sale now!

As always, we’ve got a series of FREE desktop wallpaper images for you to enjoy and strobist fans will find our lighting information and EXIF data on each image’s caption, too. Simply CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to visit our Flickr page where all the goodies lay in wait for your visit.

Feature Car: Dave Hart’s 1953 Chevrolet Lead Sled Sedan

15 Oct

Along with Dave Hart’s awesome 1933 Ford tourer that we showed you last week, we also shot his 1953 Chev’ lead sled for the same issue of Heavy Duty Hot Rods magazine (aka Modified Street Hot Rods), which goes on sale any day now. Dave also built this machine himself in the shed at home, including the weekend roof chop and long, lapping flame job.

The Chevrolet is used as Dave’s wife’s daily, proving once and for all that car like this shouldn’t be kept in the shed. Backing it up is a 2009 350ci small-block and T350 and as you can see from the pics, this beast is visually loud. Clearly it’s the way Dave likes things to be.

As always, we’ve got a selection of desktop wallpaper-sized images for you to view and download for your own computer. For the photogs, you’ll find our EXIF data on each image as well. Just CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to jump.

Feature Car: Andrew McClelland’s 1928 Ford Tourer

05 Oct

Issue 18 of Heavy Duty Hot Rods (aka Modified Street Hot Rods) is about to hit the stands and includes three photo shoots by Hosking Industries, including the one we did on Andrew McClelland’s awesome retro 1928 Ford Tourer, shown here. Resplendent in its undercoat grey paint and boasting plenty of understated pin striping, the flathead-powered open-cab rod gets plenty of attention.

Andrew and his Drag-Ens club mates built the rod in a short time frame for their annual Valla Rod Run, that the club puts together on the NSW north coast. Here, Andrew’s daughter scored the job of cruising the funky flattie along the cruise route all weekend, grabbing a trophy for her efforts.

Feature Cars: Al & Kerry Scott’s 1938/1950 Chevrolets

12 Jul

Not content to own one beautiful street rod, Al & Kerry Scott have at least two gorgeous pre-1950 Chevrolet rods parked on their premises, both lovingly built by Al himself, with another couple on the boil. Pictured here are Al’s two completed machines: a WRX blue 1938 model and a Hothouse green 1950 coupe, both powered by small-blocks. You can read all about both in the extensive feature story in issue 16 of Heavy Duty Hot Rods, which goes on sale this month.

Featuring nice details like shaved handles, slammed suspension (the ’50 uses bags) and neat interiors, they’re a classy pair that prove you don’t need a blue oval on your rod to be cool. As always, we’ve got a selection of FREE desktop wallpaper images for your enjoyment and photographers can check out the details of our lighting setups on our Flickr page, as well as EXIF data. Just CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to jump.

Feature Car: Ed Spiteri’s 1934 Ford Roadster

26 Jun

Issue 15 of Heavy Duty Hot Rods is on-sale now and contains our feature photo shoot on Ed Spiteri’s incredibly clean 1934 Ford roadster hot rod. Ed’s had this machine in his garage for almost 10 years and you’d be forgiven for thinking that something this clean is a fresh build, however the car – like everything in his expansive garage – is simply immaculate, regardless of age.

Powered by a blown 302ci Cleveland V8, the ’34 is no slouch. It also features an HR Holden front end and rear suspension setup, with a C10 gearbox and 9in diff’. Be sure to read the car’s full story in issue 15 of the magazine, at your newsagent now.

As always, we’ve got six FREE desktop wallpaper images of Ed’s ’34 available in 1680-resolution. Just CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to view. You’ll also find lighting information and EXIF data if you’re a fellow shutterbug.

Feature Car: Steve Trappell’s HG and HT Holden Monaros

21 Jun

It isn’t every day you get the chance to shoot the cover of a national magazine and we’re very happy to show you a handful of images from our recent photo shoot on Steve Trappell’s beautiful 1970 HG and 1969 HT GTS Monaros. We shot them together in Steve’s hometown of Newcastle, NSW and they appear on the cover of the July 2012 issue of Australian Classic Car magazine.

Steve had only recently completed an extensive and perfect restoration on the brown HT GTS when we photographed it, while the silver HG Monaro is still awaiting its turn under the knife and wears its share of patina from years of love and use. Thanks to the horrid damp conditions over the preceding summer, it took us a good couple of months to actually get these two in front of the lens.

While conditions weren’t ideal, we reckon the shots came out pretty nicely. In addition to the full colour versions you see pictured here, we also supplied the magazine with some washed-out, faded and rather vintage-looking options which they ended up using; including for the cover itself and the centre poster. As always, we’ve got a selection of desktop wallpaper sized images for you to view and download on our Flickr page and strobist fans can read our lighting information there, too. Feature Car: Don Mills’ 1967 Holden HR Panel Van

04 Jun

Issue 45 of Custom Utes magazine is due out on the stands shortly and feature our photo shoot and story on Don Mills and his sweet 1967 Holden HR panel van, HRROOT. The yellow van has been entirely home built in Don’s two-car garage, including the paint and panel, engine work, machining… you name it. Be sure to pick up a copy of the magazine so you can read the entire story.

The van is powered by a 308ci Holden V8 from an HX Kingswood and is backed up by a narrowed Borg Warner diff’, with a T5 5-speed in between. The cabin is cool, too, with plenty of custom touches like that wicked tubular centre console and all that billet machining completed by Don.

As always, we’ve got a selection of images from the shoot for you to download FREE as desktop wallpapers and lighting and EXIF info is available on our Flickr page for any shooters out there interested. CLICK HERE or on the thumbnails below to check them out.

Feature Car: Mick Molloy’s Holden HQ Tonner

24 May

Hey! We just realised we hit the 300 post mark with our last feature car update! Hooray for us.

Anyway, Custom Utes issue 45 is due to hit the stands soon and contains a tonne of Hosking Industries feature car photography, feature stories and coverage of the 2011 Taren Point Rat Day. One of the feature cars inside is Mick Molloy’s sweet 1973 Holden HQ ‘tonner’, pictured here.

Powered by a hard-revving 327ci small-block Chev’ V8, the bright orange ute has been a collaborative effort between Mick and some of his employees, with the end goal to drag race the Holden and destroy tyres at the annual Summernats festival in Canberra. You can read all about the caged machine in issue 45 of Custom Utes, on sale soon.

While this was an outdoor shoot in full sun-to-light cloud, we still made use of our Canon Speedlite flashes and strobist fans will find lighting information on our Flickr page, as well as the usual EXIF data. CLICK HERE to view and download six FREE desktop wallpaper images!
