Opinion Piece: Silly Season (Street Commodores Editorial Columns)

07 Aug

This is the eleventh in a regular series of editorial pieces we’ll be posting here on the blog, originally written by Hosking Industries’ Ben Hosking for Street Commodores magazine and other magazines he’s completed opinion pieces for. This column appeared in issue 177 of Street Commodores:

Silly Season (Written 24 September, 2010)

We’re in the thick of the Silly Season: there are more shows than we could hope to get to and Xmas is just around the corner… viva la Commodores!

I love this time of year. Sure, it’s hot as buggery and the car sweats almost as much as I do sitting in Sydney gridlock with no air-con. But it’s this time of year that sees the entire country come alive for the modified car enthusiast.

It’s show season and there are more shows happening every weekend in every corner of Australia than at any other time of year. The afternoons stay bright much longer – especially for those states enjoying the magic of daylight savings time – and for most of us, that means there’s seemingly more time for relaxing evening cruises to the beach… or anywhere else for that matter.

Interview: Bjorn ‘Speed’ Strid of Soilwork for

09 Sep

Soilwork audio interview with Ben have just published my recent interview with Bjorn ‘Speed’ Strid of Sweden’s Soilwork

Formed amongst the heady days of the Gothenburg death metal scene in Sweden in 1995, Soilwork quickly became known as one of the most original and progressive bands in the genre. Their prolific work ethic has seen them release eight studio albums and tour the world relentlessly over the last 15 years. Their new album, ‘The Panic Broadcast’ continues to develop on their progressive talents by including elements of funk, pop rock and symphonic genres; yet the music never fails to pummel with sonic brutality.

We chatted about their new album, influences, the 1990s Gothenburg scene, working with Devin Townsend, Bjorn’s upcoming 1970s rock side project ‘Night Flight Orchestra’ and much more.

Wicked Wednesdays: FREE High-Resolution Patina Textures 3

08 Sep

We attended the 2010 Taren Point Rat Rod Day last weekend and took a million photographs of the excellent rods on display. We also took the opportunity to close in on a lot of the amazing patina textures offered us by the rusty old rat rods that make the Rat Day such a popular event each year – and offer six of them to you this week!

The rods on display turned up on a windy, but sunny Father’s Day morning from all over Sydney and beyond. It’s amazing the kinds of things people have hidden away in their garages and even more amazing that for the most part, they were all driven to the event and home again without a cop car to be seen. We were there shooting the event for High-Performance Hotrods and Custom Utes magazines and we’ll definitely be attending again in 2011.

As usual, our textures are FREE for personal and commercial use. However, resale, repackaging and redistribution are strictly verboten – punishable by death. Seriously!

Click the thumbs for the high-res experience:
