Oops! We totally forgot about our image gallery and live review from the Helmet and Melvins show at Sydney’s HiFi on December 15, 2013! being Ben’s favourite band of all time, it’s pretty hard to believe that one slipped under the radar. We were shocked to see no line up for tonight’s show, just moments before opening time. There were literally 15 people waiting patiently in front of Sydney’s HiFi, with crowds of soccer fans streaming past at from Allianz Stadium wondering what these scruffy metal heads were doing out in public on a Sunday evening. Thankfully though, all this lack of early enthusiasm proved to be was a more mature, clever kind of music fan that clearly hates waiting in lines.

By the time Sydney’s own Nunchukka Superfly were around half way through their crunching set of jam-room super grooves the HiFi was more than half full – as if a couple of busloads of punters had miraculously all arrived at once. Their insistent, explosive riffing got the early crowd moving, with spasmodic, jagged physical contortions on stage reinforcing the powerful movements of the music. Be sure to look for the band’s forthcoming album “Open Your Eyes to Smoke” being launched at Valve on December 21 – their first since 2008.

Here’s a series of photos we took at the recent Sydney gig by USA deathcore band Suicide Silence. They performed at the Bald Faced Stag Hotel in Leichardt, Sydney Australia after a venue change from the UNSW Roundhouse. Hosking Industries shot the gig and wrote a review for theAUreview.com. We’ve republished the review for you below and you can now view the images on our Flickr page in a higher resolution than they were originally published.

Photo Gallery: Soilwork at Manning Bar – October 22, 2010

25 Oct

I went along to the recent Soilwork concert at the Manning Bar in Sydney last Friday night one behalf of Lifemusicmedia.com. I was there to photograph the Swedish band’s gig with support band Buried in Verona.

Soilwork play a form of metal called melodic death metal and formed in Helsingborg in the 1990s. Their latest album, ‘The Panic Broadcast’ is a killer slab of metal and sees the band really return to form after one or two less impressive releases possibly a result of founding guitarist Peter Wichers’ absence.

Photo Gallery: Exodus @ Manning Bar – October 2, 2010

04 Oct

I attended the Exodus gig at the Manning Bar on the campus of the university of Sydney on Saturday October 3, 2010 – shooting it for Lifemusicmedia.com. Exodus is one of the seminal ‘Bay Area’ thrash bands from the USA that were around since the birth of thrash. Kirk Hammett from Metallica was actually in Exodus before he joined Metallica in the early 1980s.

Supporting acts on the night were Subtract from New Zealand and Switchblade from Australia. Switchblade played a form of technical death metal with a rather clean cut image. All the band members were wearing matching black work shirts with their logo on the sleeve. Kinda reminded me of early Staind, when they all were black Dickies or Ben Sherman shirts.

I will probably also be reviewing the gig, but for now enjoy the photos!

Memory Man

A shot from my first gig shooting live music, taken at the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney. Hadn’t shot any live music in about 10 years and back then it was all on 1600iso film; not digital.

Three Australian bands were playing: Kids of 88 and Howl, with Cassette Kids headlining.

Not my kind of music, but all three bands put on a pretty good show and gave me plenty of action to shoot.

I shot a gig at the Oxford Art Factory in Darlinghurst (Sydney) on Friday night, June 18. It was headlined by the Cassette Kids and supported by Howl and Kids of 88. While not my style of music, it was a good opportunity for me to test out my new camera gear under stage lighting conditions. It went well!

CLICK HERE to check out a selection of about 30 images from the show and additional, exclusive images are now online at Lifemusicmedia.com.

Would love to hear your feedback on the shots, as it was the first live show I’d shot in about 10 years.
