Feature Car: Lexus Aplin’s 2013 Volkswagen Beetle

17 Dec

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing a number of Volkswagen Beetles over the years, but never one of the new generation. So I was pretty excited when I saw Lexus Aplin’s 2013 Volkswagen Beetle sitting with its belly on the ground at the 2019 VW Nationals. A call to Craig at VWMA secured the car a feature story and we got to work arranging a photo shoot.
With an extensive Maxton body kit, Airlift 3P Performance Suspension kit and TSW Sebring wheels, Lexus Aplin’s 2013 Volkswagen Beetle is completely transformed from the tired stocker it was when Lexus found the car. Inside, a Sirocco R interior makes things far more sporty and the whole car gets more oopmh thanks to a Stage 1 APR tune and intake upgrade that nets the car around 30kW extra power. Further improvements come from a custom 2.5in cat-back exhaust.
My photos were features in issue 64 of VW Magazine Australia.

Cover Car: Fabion Corio’s 1962 VW Karmann Ghia

24 Oct

My photo shoot on Fabion Corio’s pristine 1962 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was featured on the front cover of the latest issue of VW Magazine Australia, which is still on sale now. Powered by a 1776cc engine with twin Kadron carbs and custom manifolds, the car sits nice and low and looked beautiful as the sun went down during our shoot on Sydney’s south-eastern shores.

Feature Car: Nick Blunck’s 1961 Volkswagen Beetle

12 Dec

Nick Blunck is a dedicated VW fan. He owns at least two Beetles and can be regularly seen posting images of sexy Euro sports cars via his social media channels.
He lusted after a period-specific rally-style Beetle using parts and mods you might have seen in the 1950s, using parts from companies around at the time like Oettinger. This tasty example is the result of his toil and it is featured in issue 60 of VW Magazine Australia.

My photo shoot of the insane turbo, stroker racing Volkswagen Beetle from Wayne Penrose Volkswagen (WPVW) made it on to the front cover of the new issue of Retro Cars in the UK!

Cover Cars: Andy Roberts’ Trio of Volkswagen Samba Buses

Andy Roberts' Trio of Volkswagen Samba Buses

Andy Roberts’ Trio of Volkswagen Samba buses were featured on the front cover of issue 59 of VW Magazine Australia (VWMA). The trio consists a 1957 23-window, 1960 23-window and 1963 21-window model and surely makes it one of the more impressive private collections in the country. The fact that they’ve been immaculately restored and catalogued just adds to the appeal. The feature also marks my fifth front cover of VWMA 🙂

Feature Car: Graham Battersby’s Turbo 1835cc 1967 Volkswagen Beetle

21 May

I photographed Graham Battersby’s Turbo 1835cc 1967 Volkswagen Beetle for VW Magazine Australia and it appeared in the May-July 2018 issue, which is still on shelves nationwide now. Such a cool beastie.

Feature Car: Manuel Vassallo’s 1958 Volkswagen Beetle

01 Mar

Manuel Vassallo’s retro-chic, patina-loving 1958 Volkswagen beetle is the real deal. No faux rust or patina here. It’s all legit, weather beaten history on wheels and was featured in the Feb-Apr 2018 issue of VW Magazine Australia.

Feature Car: Tony ‘Doc’ Bowden’s 1967 Split-Window Volkswagen Kombi

09 Oct

I was lucky enough to have two photo shoots in the latest issue of VW Magazine Australia, which is on-sale now. One of these was of Tony Bowden’s 1967 Volkswagen Split-Window Kombi, pictured here. I particularly loved the treatment of the inner roof lining.

Cover Car: Daniel Garland’s Volkswagen 1969 Type 3 Squareback

27 Sep

I don’t always know much about the cars that I’m sent to photograph and Daniel Garland’s ’69 Type 3 Volkswagen was one of those. So I was pleasantly surprised when I got to the shoot to find an immaculate, freshly built Type 3 running a twin-turbo Subaru engine! What a machine!

Feature Car: James Falzon’s 1976 Volkswagen Kombi Swagman Camper

09 Aug

My photo shoot on James Falzon’s 1976 Volkswagen Kombi Swagman Camper appeared in the last issue of VW Magazine Australia, which was on sale last month. What may look like a sedate holiday machine actually boasts a Wayne Penrose-built 2.7L injected stroker that makes 160hp!
