Feature Car: Tony Moit’s 1976 Datsun 260Z

07 May

While the name of Moits has historically been synonymous with high profile drag racing, the family name also has a rich history when it comes to performance street cars. I photographed Michael Moit’s killer twin-turbo Ford Cortina for the front cover of Street Machine late in 2020 (see it HERE) and recently I travelled back to the Moits Racing workshop to photograph Tony Moit’s 1976 Datsun 260Z.
Both cars have a long history in the family and the scene. This 260z even spent some time acting as the pizza delivery car in the TV show Fat Pizza.
Having recently undergone an extensive restoration and update, the 260z now slays with fresh Sting Red paint, a fresh EFI-controlled 347ci Windsor V8, fresh OE-style interior retrim and those gorgeous Watanabe eight-spoke 17in rims.
The shoot on Tony Moit’s 1976 Datsun 260Z was featured in the April 2021 issue of Street Machine.

Cover Car: Michael Moit’s Ford TD Cortina

05 Feb

I recently got to photograph a bit of a legend on the Sydney car scene from over the last 30 years. Michael Moit’s Ford TD Cortina used to terrorise drag strips like Oran Park where the car would wheelstand thanks to its hi-po Clevo and Windsor V8s – the latter of which took the car to a best of 8.4sec @ 155mph.
It recently scored a new lease on life with a makeover and a twin-turbo conversion for the original Clevo-headed Windsor. Making 850hp, this combo is incredibly considered the test mule before building a more serious bottom end down the track.
The shoot was featured on the cover of the 2020 Street Machine Yearbook.

Cover Car: Image Conversion’s 1964 Ford XM Falcon

04 Jan

My photo shoot on the Image Conversions’ Ford Falcon appeared on the cover of the December 2020 issue of Street Machine magazine!
Powered by a 1000hp Barra turbocharged straight six, the ’64 vintage sedan is full of high-tech mechanicals and interior components – right down to the one-off custom 3D-printed LED tail light assemblies.

Feature Car: Sammy’s 1956 Volkswagen Single-Cab Kombi

08 Dec

Believe it or not, this way-cool rusted and bent ’56 Volkswagen Single-Cab Kombi belongs to an 11-year-old boy! Sam and his dad pulled the raw carcass of this machine from a field out in the country and proceeded to bring it back to life, including a lot of rust repairs, a fresh 1641cc engine and that unique interior made up of patina’d signage.
My shoot was featured in issue 67 of VW Magazine Australia.

Feature Car: David Galea’s 1970 Holden Monaro

06 Nov

Thanks to COVID-19 and having our first baby, 2020 has been a pretty slow year for photo shoots. However, I did get commissioned to shoot David Galea’s gorgeous and ballsy 1970 Holden Monaro for the October 2020 issue of Street Machine.
Boasting a Motown 400ci SBC, Powerglide and narrowed 9in rear end, the car is old-school, but not stuck in the past. Smooth and slammed, but not stock.

Feature Car: Lee Payne’s 1971 Chevrolet Camaro

14 Jul

Not many people can lay claim to a first-time build of the quality that this 1971 Chevrolet Camaro exhibits. From front to back, top and the bottom, Lee Payne’s second-gen’ Chevrolet Camaro is all class (and plenty of grunt).
The car landed a coveted Summernats Top 60 spot as a reward for all his hard work – much of which was done in the shed at home with minimal tools and plenty of hard graft.
It runs a 540ci Dart-based big-block, backed by a T400 and a braced 9in. Dressed in a unique Miami Blue hue complete with ’70s-perfect vinyl roof, the coupe is damned-near perfect and appeared in the June 2020 issue of Street Machine.

Feature Car: Jovan Batar’s 1984 XE Ford Falcon

11 Feb

There’s now doubting that 1980s Ford Falcons are booming in popularity right now. I must have photographed four or five in the last couple of years that have all been stand-out quality and Jovan Batar’s 1984 XE Ford Falcon is no exception.
Boasting a 369ci Dart-based stroker, flawless Galaxy Grey metallic paint and a period-looking interior treatment, it’s all top notch stuff for Jovan Batar’s Ford Falcon. But it’s the attention to detail that really makes it shine.
The crazy thing is, that Jovan wasn’t even intending to build the Falcon to anywhere near the level that he has, because he’s already building an elite-level 1965 XP Falcon coupe!
The car was featured in the January issue of Street Machine.

All that will be worked out prior to the lessons, which will be a minimum of two hours, at a time and a location within your general area (where possible). I’ll also try and set the lesson after one of my proper magazine shoots. So you can come along and watch that process as part of the coaching.

I’m also offering more general educational sessions in automotive photography techniques like strobist and even basic camera skills should you feel you need it.

Contact me today HERE if you’re interested in learning how to automotive light paint and we can discuss your specific needs, questions and desired outcomes.

Feature Car: Lexus Aplin’s 2013 Volkswagen Beetle

17 Dec

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing a number of Volkswagen Beetles over the years, but never one of the new generation. So I was pretty excited when I saw Lexus Aplin’s 2013 Volkswagen Beetle sitting with its belly on the ground at the 2019 VW Nationals. A call to Craig at VWMA secured the car a feature story and we got to work arranging a photo shoot.
With an extensive Maxton body kit, Airlift 3P Performance Suspension kit and TSW Sebring wheels, Lexus Aplin’s 2013 Volkswagen Beetle is completely transformed from the tired stocker it was when Lexus found the car. Inside, a Sirocco R interior makes things far more sporty and the whole car gets more oopmh thanks to a Stage 1 APR tune and intake upgrade that nets the car around 30kW extra power. Further improvements come from a custom 2.5in cat-back exhaust.
My photos were features in issue 64 of VW Magazine Australia.
