Feature Car: Darryl Penton's Toyota Hilux

Slammed and Blown Toyota-V8 Stunner

I got the chance to photograph Darryl Penton’s blown V8-powered Toyota Hilux minitruck for the 2024 Street Machine Yearbook. This truck has been an ongoing labour of love for Darryl for some time and it is riddled with detail.

From the snake-belly stance provided by the airbags and big billet wheels filling the massaged guards, to the smooth bodywork and swapped front end, the truck looks the business. Check out the smoothed tray area, too.

But step inside the you’ll see a Summernats-ready show interior that’s matched by a smooth and stout blown Toyota V8, proving this machine isn’t just for looks.

Feature Car: Chad Ribbons' 1965 Holden HD Ute

Chad Ribbons’ 1965 Holden HD Ute was built as a tribute to his late father. Boasting a custom ‘toilet wall’ green finish and sitting on its belly thanks to a Slam Specialties airbag system, Chad Ribbons’ 1965 Holden HD Ute is packed with ‘cool’ and garners plenty of attention wherever it goes.
The ute runs a built 202ci Holden six with a set of triple SU carbs, backed by a Trimatic and Volvo diff’ housing with 3.7:1 gears. Rolling low on the raked 17- and 19in billet rims, it looks fantastic.
My photo shoot on the car was featured in the June 2021 issue of Street Machine magazine.

Feature Car: Smith Concepts' 1965 Chevrolet C10 Fleetside

Check out Smith Concepts’ 1965 Chevrolet C10. I’ve had the pleasure of photographic the work of Kyle Smith at Smith Concepts many times over the last decade or so. In fact, I think my second ever photo shoot in 2010 was of Kyle’s white Valiant ute and his funky Yamaha rat bike (he’s progressed onto big twins since).
Since then I’ve had several custom bikes, a few hot rods and workshop shoots out at his Brookvale, NSW shop. But it’s this ’65 Chevrolet C10 Fleetside that Kyle is perhaps most proud of – at least until the next one is built.
Slammed on its arse and painted in a deep, deep DNA Cherry Black, Smith Concepts’ 1965 Chevrolet C10 is powered by a 350ci SBC and boasts a ton of incredible detail. It was also built largely by, and managed by Smith Concepts – the shop’s first big all-in project. Plus, it was completed in just 12 months! No wonder Kyle is so proud.
The shoot featured in the March 2021 issue of Street Machine.

Feature Car: Tim Saliba's Holden VP Commodore

Tim Saliba’s Holden VP Commodore was featured in the October issue of Street Machine. I’d shot the car once before for another magazine, but Tim has since made some further improvements, both to the parts list but also driveability improvements. The airbagged, 393ci Holden V8-powered sedan looks sweet in its HSV Senator body kit and riding super low on the Simmons FR19s. Inside, it’s all covered… in shale-coloured leather, that is. Dash, door trims, Recaro seats, centre console – everything is drenched in leather. Even the boot install that also boasts a pair of 12in subs is leather-clad. Tim Saliba’s Holden Commodore is one gorgeous machine!

Feature Car: Webby's Speed Shop 1936 Ford

Webby’s Speed Shop in Newcastle crafts incredible, truly bespoke custom rods. Basically a one-man operation, Tony Webster’s latest creation is a reworking of his own work truck. Formerly a monstrous blown Hemi-powered rat rod, the ’36 Ford is now the epitome of class and sophistication and my photo shoot on it was featured in the 22nd August 2019 edition of Just Cars.

Feature Car: Mark Sullivan's 1963 Lincoln Continental

I’ve been lucky enough to photograph a number of Mark Sullivan’s automotive creations over the last six or seven years. I think this air-bagged Lincoln Continental makes it number three, plus a Performance Garage cover shoot.
The Lincoln, which boasts a 393ci Windsor V8 and custom orange trim, was featured in the August issue of Street Machine.

Feature Car: James Gatt's 1964 Chevy Nova

Between an unfortunate workshop accident and life just generally getting in the way, it took two years for me to finally get James Gatt’s superb 1964 Chevrolet Nova in front of my camera and it appeared in the March 2019 issue of Street Machine. Bags, billet and a sexy multi-throttle injection setup, the car is all class.
