Feature Car: Image Conversions' 1969 Chevrolet Camaro

I’ve been lucky enough to photograph a few of the vehicles to roll out of the Image Conversions doors, including the 1000hp Barra-powered XM Falcon on the cover of the December 2020 issue of Street Machine and Michael Ellard’s own LS-powered Rodeo minitruck.
In a similar vein, Image Conversions’ Chev Camaro, belonging to ‘David’, packs plenty of punch in numerous categories: power, handling, looks and wow-factor. Perhaps the most notable thing about the car is its choice of power plant: a Mercury Marine 7L SB4 (meaning small-block, 4-valves per cylinder). It’s an LS7 bottom end with unique twin-cam heads that costs a ton, but produces a reliable 750hp with 11.7:1 compression and even sounds unique.
Underneath, there’s an Art Morrison Corvette-style front end and a matching Art Morrison IRS at the back. The shoot on Image Conversions’ Chev Camaro was featured in the April 2021 issue of Street Machine.

Feature Car: Smith Concepts' 1965 Chevrolet C10 Fleetside

Check out Smith Concepts’ 1965 Chevrolet C10. I’ve had the pleasure of photographic the work of Kyle Smith at Smith Concepts many times over the last decade or so. In fact, I think my second ever photo shoot in 2010 was of Kyle’s white Valiant ute and his funky Yamaha rat bike (he’s progressed onto big twins since).
Since then I’ve had several custom bikes, a few hot rods and workshop shoots out at his Brookvale, NSW shop. But it’s this ’65 Chevrolet C10 Fleetside that Kyle is perhaps most proud of – at least until the next one is built.
Slammed on its arse and painted in a deep, deep DNA Cherry Black, Smith Concepts’ 1965 Chevrolet C10 is powered by a 350ci SBC and boasts a ton of incredible detail. It was also built largely by, and managed by Smith Concepts – the shop’s first big all-in project. Plus, it was completed in just 12 months! No wonder Kyle is so proud.
The shoot featured in the March 2021 issue of Street Machine.

Feature Car: Danny Probert's Ford XD Falcon

Danny Probert’s Ford XD Falcon has certainly been one of the more original builds I’ve had the task of photographing recently. From the outside it might look like a pretty typical XD Falcon that’s been slammed on its arse. But before long you’ve been pulled into a black hole of detail and clever engineering.
It’s a drift car, so yeah, it’s a bit rough around the edges. Don’t go looking for tidy panel gaps. instead, concentrate on what it DOES have: a 600hp Barra turbo six, ridiculous steering lock, a full cage, no boot floor and custom front and rear suspension (the rear is IRS).
My shoot was featured in the March 2021 issue of Street Machine. For the photography fans, the main exterior shots were lit with a single Godox AD600 through a large strip box, lighting painting with multiple exposures and edited and composited in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Feature Car: Steve Bowman's 1965 Chevy II Nova Sport

I photographed Steve Bowman’s classic and gorgeous 1965 Chevy II Nova Sport Coupe for the February 2021 issue of Street Magazine. This car boasts a truly timeless combination of parts and colours that should mean Steve can simply cruise and enjoy this sweet machine for many years to come.
An original 327 car, it’s now powered by a 525hp 383ci SBC and backed by a T700 and 9in, the coupe features a smooth engine bay, Weld Draglites and a smooth , colour-coded metal dash with classic black leather trim.

Feature Car: John Dennis' 1973 Ford Escort

John Dennis’ 1973 Ford Escort is a genre-busting example of what can happen when you forget about current trends and build from your gut. powered by an old-school FJ20T and slammed on its arse, the Esky is making 260rwhp on a run-in tune (25psi planned on E85) and boasts a host of awesome engineering ideas.
Mini tubs (allowing 17x10in Foregline rims under the bum), pumped guards and a Spartan interior almost devoid of soft furnishings makes this one early small-Ford to remember! The shoot was featured in the January 2021 issue of Street Machine.

Cover Car: Image Conversion's 1964 Ford XM Falcon

My photo shoot on the Image Conversions’ Ford Falcon appeared on the cover of the December 2020 issue of Street Machine magazine!
Powered by a 1000hp Barra turbocharged straight six, the ’64 vintage sedan is full of high-tech mechanicals and interior components – right down to the one-off custom 3D-printed LED tail light assemblies.

Feature Car: David Galea's 1970 Holden Monaro

Thanks to COVID-19 and having our first baby, 2020 has been a pretty slow year for photo shoots. However, I did get commissioned to shoot David Galea’s gorgeous and ballsy 1970 Holden Monaro for the October 2020 issue of Street Machine.
Boasting a Motown 400ci SBC, Powerglide and narrowed 9in rear end, the car is old-school, but not stuck in the past. Smooth and slammed, but not stock.

Feature Car: Lee Payne's 1971 Chevrolet Camaro

Not many people can lay claim to a first-time build of the quality that this 1971 Chevrolet Camaro exhibits. From front to back, top and the bottom, Lee Payne’s second-gen’ Chevrolet Camaro is all class (and plenty of grunt).
The car landed a coveted Summernats Top 60 spot as a reward for all his hard work – much of which was done in the shed at home with minimal tools and plenty of hard graft.
It runs a 540ci Dart-based big-block, backed by a T400 and a braced 9in. Dressed in a unique Miami Blue hue complete with ’70s-perfect vinyl roof, the coupe is damned-near perfect and appeared in the June 2020 issue of Street Machine.

Feature Car: Lexus Aplin's 2013 Volkswagen Beetle

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing a number of Volkswagen Beetles over the years, but never one of the new generation. So I was pretty excited when I saw Lexus Aplin’s 2013 Volkswagen Beetle sitting with its belly on the ground at the 2019 VW Nationals. A call to Craig at VWMA secured the car a feature story and we got to work arranging a photo shoot.
With an extensive Maxton body kit, Airlift 3P Performance Suspension kit and TSW Sebring wheels, Lexus Aplin’s 2013 Volkswagen Beetle is completely transformed from the tired stocker it was when Lexus found the car. Inside, a Sirocco R interior makes things far more sporty and the whole car gets more oopmh thanks to a Stage 1 APR tune and intake upgrade that nets the car around 30kW extra power. Further improvements come from a custom 2.5in cat-back exhaust.
My photos were features in issue 64 of VW Magazine Australia.

Feature Car: Tomi Vatavuk's 1974 Ford XB Falcon

If there’s a nicer XB Ford Falcon out there, I certainly haven’t photographed it! I got to photograph Tomi’s incredible ‘SOKOL’ Falcon sedan for the October issue of Street Machine. Perhaps the best thing about the XB – which includes a custom rear splitter/air dam, smoothed engine bay and plethora of custom billet and carbon fibre pieces – is that Tomi was able to do a lot of the build himself!

On top of being able to hang out with such a nice car, and a nice owner (who also happened to play guitar and like heavy music!), was being able to shoot the car in such a clean workshop. I personally have never seen such a clean work space. Especially given that besides handling custom work, it also serves as a regular servicing workshop. Look at that floor!
