Feature Car: Stefan Tomevski's VL Calais

Top 60, 500rwhp+ RB30 = THEKNG

There’s no doubting the perennial-faveourite status of the VL Commodore/Calais. I’ve been writing about them and photographing them for over 20 years!

When you see examples like Stefan Tomevski’s THEKNG, respendent in its glossy undercoat grey and red Coulsen-style trim, you can understand why.

I photographed the 500+hp turbo sedan near Stefan’s home south of Sydney in late 2022 on a cold rainy evening. A shiny new pre-fab concrete industrial building gave us our backdrop and the rest is history.

You can see the shoot and read the story in the January 2023 issue of Street Machine.

Feature Car: Anthony's PROWOG Holden Torana

Anthony’s PROWOG Holden Torana. Over the course of 11 years, Sydneysider Anthony Terkalas has built one of the more insane Holden Toranas that I’ve had the pleasure of shooting. Known as PROWOG, the LJ Torana is even now still in the fine tuning process of getting down the track in its fastest possible state – but the specs speak for themselves.

Based around a massive methanol-sucking 540ci big-block and full-chassis, the combo also boasts a huge 118mm Precision turbo. It’s backed by a two-speed TH400 and sheet metal 9in rear. But really, the photos probably do it better justice than me rattling off some tech specs.

My photo shoot on the car was featured in the October issue of Street Machine magazine.

Feature Car: Danny Probert's Ford XD Falcon

Danny Probert’s Ford XD Falcon has certainly been one of the more original builds I’ve had the task of photographing recently. From the outside it might look like a pretty typical XD Falcon that’s been slammed on its arse. But before long you’ve been pulled into a black hole of detail and clever engineering.
It’s a drift car, so yeah, it’s a bit rough around the edges. Don’t go looking for tidy panel gaps. instead, concentrate on what it DOES have: a 600hp Barra turbo six, ridiculous steering lock, a full cage, no boot floor and custom front and rear suspension (the rear is IRS).
My shoot was featured in the March 2021 issue of Street Machine. For the photography fans, the main exterior shots were lit with a single Godox AD600 through a large strip box, lighting painting with multiple exposures and edited and composited in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Feature Car: John Dennis' 1973 Ford Escort

John Dennis’ 1973 Ford Escort is a genre-busting example of what can happen when you forget about current trends and build from your gut. powered by an old-school FJ20T and slammed on its arse, the Esky is making 260rwhp on a run-in tune (25psi planned on E85) and boasts a host of awesome engineering ideas.
Mini tubs (allowing 17x10in Foregline rims under the bum), pumped guards and a Spartan interior almost devoid of soft furnishings makes this one early small-Ford to remember! The shoot was featured in the January 2021 issue of Street Machine.

Feature Car: Steve Sterjovski's Holden VL Calais

Steve Sterjovski’s Holden VL Calais wears license plates that pretty much sum up the entire build. From the insane butt-dragging stance and the nutso 22x13in Simmons FR rims to the monster 3.2L RB26-based turbo six that makes some 1000rwhp thanks in part to the massive 94mm Pro Mod turbo – this VL means ‘war’.
Things don’t settle down once you open the door and get in, either. Step inside and you’ll find a cabin drenched in bone leather, complete with cage, custom fibreglass dash and so much more.
The photo shoot was featured in the 2020 Street Machine Yearbook.

Feature Car: Daniel Shannon's Holden VL Commodore

Daniel Shannon’s Holden VL Commodore was actually his first car. Purchased at the age of 16, he grew up in a Holden family and messed around with the car throughout his young years. Around a decade ago, Daniel decided to build the car right and this is what results from his hard work: a Walkinshaw-clad, RB26/30 turbo hybrid built by Maatouks that’s capable of some 1000hp and so much more.

My photo shoot on Daniel Shannon’s Holden VL Commodore appeared in the April 2020 issue of Street Machine.

Feature Car: Peter Robson's Holden VE Ute 'UDLO5E'

Late-model Commodores haven’t come in for the same level of customisation as most older models… well, with exceptions. Like Peter Robson’s crazy VE Commodore ute for example.
With a big turbo on its 403ci stroker, suicide doors, custom trim, smooth engine bay and 24x12in billets under its tubbed arse… this is one very custom late-model Commodore and it was featured in the August 2019 issue of Street Machine.
