Front Cover: VW Mag Australia - Nov '22

VW Mag Australia - Nov 2022

The new issue of VW Magazine Australia (VWMA) is out this week and contains three of my photoshoots. Gracing the front cover is Izzy’sheavily patina’d single-cab, as well as Dean’s Karman Ghia and Anthony’s rare-as Puma coupe from South America.

Be sure to pick up a copy and check out their stories! #supportprint

Feature Car: Maher Azzam's 1976 Mk1 VW Golf

Incredible Mk1 Golf Self-Build

I ran into Maher Azzam and his superbly clean 1976 Mk1 Volkswagen Golf at the VW Nationals in 2021 and immediately sought him out for a feature shoot. VWMA picked up the car for a full feature and you can see why when you look at the photos.

Powered by a mostly-standard 2L 16V four-cylinder (and a pair of Weber DCOE 45s), the engine is housed in a pristine bay. The car was treated to a bare metal respray in the factory ivory. It took Maher a year to do the job himself, block sanding the car five times to minimise the use of filler.

The car sits in the weeds on a set of BBS-style 15in alloy rims with the rears measuring 8.5in wide. It’s achieved with a set of BC Racing coil-overs and the looks is both purposeful and sexy.

Inside, you’ll find a later-model dash conversion and a re-trimmed interior that looks in keeping with the period. Even the stereo features a three-cassette storage unit.

You can still find issue 73 of VWMA on newsstands now, so go grab yourself a copy and catch up on the whole story. What a DIY hero!

Feature Car: Wayne Murray's 1972 Volkswagen Dual-Cab

Wayne's 1972 VW Dual-Cab

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Wayne Murray previously, photographing his multi-award-winning, immaculately restored 1972 VW Kombi that was featured in VWMA way back when. This is his latest incredible resto – another self build – that appeared in issue 71 of VWMA (Aug-Oct 2021).

It’s a rare beast, falling into a ‘transitional’ period of production that saw the company spit out models that used certain parts only for that year – making restoration particularly difficult if you’re like Wayne and prefer things to be just as they should be. Overall, Wayne spent years scouring the world for the parts he needed or having new parts manufactured in countries as far flung as Turkey and the Netherlands. I reckon the result was worth the effort.

My photos can only tell so much of the story and I haven’t written it all here either. Do yourself a favour and find a copy of VWMA and read all about it!

Feature Car: Sammy's 1956 Volkswagen Single-Cab Kombi

Believe it or not, this way-cool rusted and bent ’56 Volkswagen Single-Cab Kombi belongs to an 11-year-old boy! Sam and his dad pulled the raw carcass of this machine from a field out in the country and proceeded to bring it back to life, including a lot of rust repairs, a fresh 1641cc engine and that unique interior made up of patina’d signage.
My shoot was featured in issue 67 of VW Magazine Australia.

Feature Car: Lexus Aplin's 2013 Volkswagen Beetle

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing a number of Volkswagen Beetles over the years, but never one of the new generation. So I was pretty excited when I saw Lexus Aplin’s 2013 Volkswagen Beetle sitting with its belly on the ground at the 2019 VW Nationals. A call to Craig at VWMA secured the car a feature story and we got to work arranging a photo shoot.
With an extensive Maxton body kit, Airlift 3P Performance Suspension kit and TSW Sebring wheels, Lexus Aplin’s 2013 Volkswagen Beetle is completely transformed from the tired stocker it was when Lexus found the car. Inside, a Sirocco R interior makes things far more sporty and the whole car gets more oopmh thanks to a Stage 1 APR tune and intake upgrade that nets the car around 30kW extra power. Further improvements come from a custom 2.5in cat-back exhaust.
My photos were features in issue 64 of VW Magazine Australia.

Cover Car: Fabion Corio's 1962 VW Karmann Ghia

My photo shoot on Fabion Corio’s pristine 1962 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was featured on the front cover of the latest issue of VW Magazine Australia, which is still on sale now. Powered by a 1776cc engine with twin Kadron carbs and custom manifolds, the car sits nice and low and looked beautiful as the sun went down during our shoot on Sydney’s south-eastern shores.

Feature Car: Kevan McConochie's Manx Buggy

Kevan McConochie’s 2.27L stroker VW-powered Manx buggy is unlike any other you’re likely to see. Slammed, widened, caged and ballsy, the Audi grey tub isn’t about to see any beach time. This is a street buggy.
I photographed it for issue 60 of VW Magazine Australia.

Feature Car: Azgar Khan's Volkswagen Mki Golf Cabrio

My photo shoot on Azgar’s slammed and sexy Volkswagen Mk1 Golf Cabrio appeared in issue 60 of VW Magazine Australia. The car has been a largely DIY build between Azgar and his mate Manuel, whose patina Beetle I photographed for the same magazine around 12 months earlier (see it here).
With a 2L 16-valve Seat Ibeza engine swap with those funky trumpets hanging off the front, and riding low on the 15×8.25in Workmeister rims, it looks sick!

Feature Car: Nick Blunck's 1961 Volkswagen Beetle

Nick Blunck is a dedicated VW fan. He owns at least two Beetles and can be regularly seen posting images of sexy Euro sports cars via his social media channels.
He lusted after a period-specific rally-style Beetle using parts and mods you might have seen in the 1950s, using parts from companies around at the time like Oettinger. This tasty example is the result of his toil and it is featured in issue 60 of VW Magazine Australia.
